Back THEN they knew how to make a movie!!
« on: 13 October 2003, 00:03 »
I just watched a movie from the early nineties called Desperado where about ninety percent of all the characters in the film are blown to hell. Even Cheech Marin gets killed. The really good thing about this movie is that they make killing funny and there isn't any of that gay bullet time like in today's shoot out movies. There's even a short nude sex scene (of only the girl thankfully). The movie has EVERYTHING!!!

I agree 100 %!!!

They made better movies before 1995.

And the comedies are even worse. How can they do films like "Something About Mary", "Cable Guy" and "Not Another Teen Movie"? What kind of dribble is that? Movies like that should never have left the paper it was written on!!!

Yes, 2001 was a great movie, but it was very unappreciated because it doesn't have all the crap that keeps dumb people's attention. A great movie if you actually want to do some thinking when you watch a film.

As for comedies, how do modern ones even compare to Robinhood: Men in Tights and Tommy boy? The only genre that I think has improved since the 80's is Science Fiction only because of our greater graphics capabilities, but still, I can't remember the last Sci Fi movie that actually stimulated my brain.

Yes, I've also become weary of all the crappy movies spewed by Hollywood. I prefer European or older American movies, from the days when they weren't repetive, glorified hodge-podges of special effects ridden with clich

I actually think "The Andromeda Strain" is one of the best sci-fi movies ever. Not THE best, but one of the best. For those who do not know this movie, here

Man, I saw Desperado a while back and I thought it sucked.  Too much of that Jean-Claude-VanDamme-super-slomo "I'm not even breathing hard" action crap.  What a shitty movie!

Desperado is actually a sequel to El Mariachi, made by the same director (Robert Rodriguez) back before he got million dollar hollywood budgets.  El Mariachi has all the great killings and sexiness without the whole tortured American Ninja crap.  And it's in Spanish.  Rodriguez shot the whole thing while being pushed around in a wheelchair.  An example of fine independent filmmaking, and an example of what happens when great directors are given too much goddamm money.

But if you like it, I guess thats cool.

yes, i've been watching many foreign language movies lately, that an some of the better japanese anime.

There are a lot of good movies in america, but 9/10 of the TV stuff  here is for dumb people.

2001 is a classic because their is but isn't a plot to it.  There is and  isn't too much suspense, and in the end when you are expecting to find out everything you find out everything ... but you don't.  Its almost like reading a religous text, you can read it over and over again and get many different interpretations from it.  Thats what makes it classic.  That and just how the movie was filmed is excellent.

I prefer things like the reanimator...I saw El Mariachi...I thought it was bland, especially since the prison guard was also a thug, and again later killed wearing blue blockers and in the final shoot out at the end too...but for the inconsistancies...I've deffinately seen worse...Pee Wee's big adventure... Speaking of Pee Wee, can u name 2 peeps who were shot in the back of the head in a movie theatre?
