still, i agree with stallman. software should be free, like speech should be free.
while i think there are some companies out there (apple, palm, riscos ltd and so on) who are doing really good work, most of them are working on proprietary software. also those companies are not really screwing people. none of them are market leaders, so it's usually to their benefit to release software that is genuinely good, in the hope thaT people will buy it for that reason.
No companies except microsoft rely on people buying their products simply because 'that's what we have at work' or 'that's what my mates all use'. This is why it is okay to entertain the idea of using proprietary software.
