DOS history?
« on: 13 June 2003, 00:08 »
Anyone know where I can get a history of the "DOS" genre of operating systems?  ALL the websearches that I do refer to MS and PC DOS!!!!    -- quite annoying!

I know about the 2 DOS histories at freedos.org but they do not have specific dates or version numbers
It's me! :-)

erm, exclude MS-DOS and anything else you don't want in your search????

You know maybe "Disk Operating System" history -Microsoft

Although Microsoft is probably in most documents, but try it.
Contains scenes of mild peril.

Do a search on QDOS.

That is what is was called before Palpatine/The Borg Queen went to Seattle and "acquired" it.

QDOS = "Quick and Dirty Operating System."

Windows 1.0 was based on it, even before it became known as "MS-DOS."

In their infinite wisdom, on a page that doesn't display correctly, you can view a little about it here:

(note from Orethrius: link is dead, Archive.org)

It's made with FrontPage, that's why it sucks.

ok, first, you're hosting it on geocities, which isn't going to work since they don't like offsite image linking, host it on a real image server or embed it in an html page and post the URL of that html page here.

secondly it's a microsoft bitmap image. Those images are huge and i think people would be well pissed of if you posted an inline bmp here, save it as a jpeg instead please.

edit: and to answer the question here are some helpful and not so helpful pages about the history of DOS:

Oh my, it's been two months since I've posted this, and I forgot about that piece of art. It's not even in BMP format anymore; I had converted it in PNG and deleted the other one. It was meant to make fun of the 'Made with Frontpage' picture on the website. Anyway, here it is:

http://ca.geocities.com/laukev7/image.html

Do you know of a better host than Geocities? I had bandwidth problems when I posted some screenshots. I'm making a website, and I don't know squat about web hosts.

well a lot of image hosts are shutting down now. i used to use boomspeed although they only allow free offsite image hosting if you are either using your pictures in online auctions or else your pictures are of the US flag. They also enable you to host your site for free so long as it's under 1M.

I like netfirms.com to be honest. 25M of free space, and one banner ad along the top of each page, and that's it. Proper ftp access, also you get perl, and you can pay them to upgrade with php, more space and no ads etc.

Personally i use xcalibre.co.uk though, they kick ass, since they run a linux cluster, and they are run from livingston too, so they're mostly scottish, which i think is a good thing! :-D
my site at www.polytheism.org.uk as well as the board at http://openopen.cjb.net is hosted with them. they're not free but you get tons of goodies with the basic account like full linux shell account, the capability to list open directories etc.

Thank you very much, Calum. I have just registered to netfirms.com, and it looks great!

As for an image host, I guess I can just post the pictures via Netfirms until I can find one.
