look at this shit... I LIKE 404 BETTER

http://sitefinder.verisign.com/lpc?url=bustoleum.com&host=bustoleum.com

if a .com or .net address doesn't exist, you're now going to be taken to their craptastical search page. come on, guys.

someone, please tell me how to block verisign completely via the hosts file on Mac OS X (it should be the same as BSD). I'll be much obliged.

Verisign should lose their DNS control over this.  And they say they have gotten lots of positive response over this...

Positive response? Yeah, no doubt... from the people who advertise on it.

We need a renegade DNS registrar that doesn't charge jack. That way everybody's on an equal playing field. The way the internet is SUPPOSED to be. Thanks to Verisign and InterNIC before them, the place has become a shithole dominated buy business because they can pay for the top names.

http://www.mikey-san.net/hosts.html

P.S

I'd use emacs or pico to do the editing. not any other text editor, eg: (in terminal)

sudo pico /etc/host

If you have your own server you could also craft a special 404 error page that was a bit nicer than 0.0.0.0, or a redirect from the 404 using URL Rewriting to say Google.

Also you'll need to do a restart ;]

This also is a great way of speeding up surfing, to say sites you visit regularly as no DNS server needs to be queried.

OK I'll shut up now   :D

I've been trying to figure out how to do this. I had modified my hosts file to block ads but I couldn't figure out what to do next so that my computer would use it. Thanks!

Shouldn't have to do anything else. Visit a site you blocked and see if it's working.

This is good news. We can expect to kiss the Verisign site finder goodbye soon.

Ever heard of the OpenNIC?  A FREE alternative to the InterNIC.  Exactly what you wanted!

What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not make software 'releases'. Our software 'escapes' leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake.
Klingon function calls do not have 'parameters' - they have 'arguments' - and they ALWAYS WIN THEM.
Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Our software does not coddle the weak.

The best way of handling it that I have heard so far is to null-route the IP# of that #$%^ing site.

Should be doable in OSX I'm guessing but don't know enough about it.

You can also ask your ISP to null route it... maybe they will be as angry as the rest of us.

I've set up a bunch of ad servers to be redirected to 127.0.0.1, and turned on the web server so that all ads are really just bad requests from my computer. This works great. I also figured out how to do it on OS 9. If there isn't already, make a file called "Hosts" in your preferences folder. You can add entries like this "adserver. A 127.0.0.1", and you have to put the period right after the domain name. You can also redirect urls with "microsoft.com. CNAME microsuck.com".
