SCO/Corel and M$ ties
« on: 18 May 2003, 08:23 »
There has to be more than just this out there.  M$ seemed to buy into Corel not long ago, apparently for purposes of expanding .NET to Linux platforms (Yeah, right).  Maybe this is somewhat rooted into the SCO/Linux battle today.  It may need to be looked into.

My personal view, is that the older the Linux(and MS) related news, the less relevance it has to present day and the future.

As such, this would seem more relevant if it happened now, or a few months ago. I'm just guessing it was part of an MS strategy that has long since been forgotten. After all, in 2000 they were fighting Linux one way, now they are fighting it a different way.

If you can't beat 'em join 'em?

Maybe MS is going to try to make software for *NIX/LINUX

perhaps they will do something like what Mac OSX did and have a Unix based System.

I feel kinda sick

Microsoft stated they will be writing a CLI-only version of Windows. This will probably somewhat of a help, even though I'm sure MS evelopers are smart enough to write one themselves.

Could this a move, since Microsoft can't beat Linux, they're going to try to outlaw it?

quote:
Late Sunday, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said acquiring the license from SCO "is representative of Microsoft's ongoing commitment to respecting intellectual property and the IT community's healthy exchange of IP through licensing. This helps to ensure IP compliance across Microsoft solutions and supports our efforts around existing products like services for Unix that further Unix interoperability." The pact was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Really makes one wonder, doesn't it? Perhaps IBM isn't the only ones who've been purloining SCO's code and IP?    ;)

Some analysts said the move was an attempt by SCO to be acquired by another company--possibly Microsoft, IBM or another firm with a stake in the matter. "I guess suing IBM wasn't enough to get them acquired, so (the letters are) the next stage," Illuminata analyst Gordon Haff said.

BUT, what if there was no previous ties, and MS and SCO are only joining together because IBM didn't give in to SCO? It's possible that there was previous ties though. However, would MS really be smart enough to look at the whole picture and notice the possibility that Linux may infringe on SCO's Unix IP, then get SCO to start this whole thing? Of course not! SCO started it, then MS suddenly realized what they had missed. I suppose it's MS's best anti-linux strategy yet.

The next stage in the fight between SCO and IBM could occur next month--SCO has threatened to revoke IBM's Unix license on June 13.

Hmmmm I guess they can't be expected to just talk tough and intimidate, they actually are gonna carry through...

hmmm...a CLI-only version of Windows.  It may not crash as much due to current computer resources and the fact that it doesn't have a GUI taking those resources up.  It doesn't mean it will be secure though.

SCO probably began the lawsuite b/c they were going under, and this is basically buying the rights to sue from SCO. They want to take on open source one-on-one. . .mano-a-boyo (Willy G of course).

I'm not sure if M$ is going to risk buying out SCO kind of Anti-trus issues regarding market share, although it may still be on their agenda to take them on as well.

BUT, from what Microsoft says, they're only getting a license for the IP "just in case"--I'm sure Windows has some small parts of SCO IP, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to get "protected" (especially with the oodles of cash they have!).
