Dual Boot/Virus Problem
« on: 29 May 2003, 16:36 »
ok i have 2 problems, 1 with win 2000 and the other with red hat linux

win 2000:
i just got my new computer last week, and i had to put win 2000 on it for a while.  on the FIRST day, i somehow got a virus that contaminated by system32 file.  i tried to clean it with mcafee virus scan 7, and it just deleted it.  now im stuck with a stupid error that pops up evry time i log in or restart, and its getting me angry.  does anyone know how to fix this without completely reinstalling win 2000?  thanks

red hat 9:
im trying to dual boot red hat 9 and win 2000 off of 2 seperate hard drives.  red hat is on the 10gb for now, and win 2000 is on the 80gb for now.  i set the jumpers so the 80 is master, and the 10 is slave, but my bios can boot to either drive first.  if i try booting to the 10gb, it just brings up a command promp for GRUB, and i dont know how to configure it to make it work correctly.  i can try to put LILO on, but im not sure if this will fix the problem.  does anyone know how do configure GRUB to boot both win 2000 and red hat 9?  thanks

id really appreciate someones help on this.  my computer has been wearing me out for a while now.

thanks a bunch

I'll be installing Red Hat 9 soon so I'll give you a yell about the grub conf.  I've done this before on a friends PC so it won't take me long when I see the grubconf in front of me.  From memory somewhere in /etc/grubconf you need some lines like:
title=windows
  root,noverify
  dev=(0,x)

where x is a number. _DONT_ actually put those lines in until I check to make sure though...  about the windows problem, are you sure that's a virus?  My Windows XP install started randomly rebooting once before trashing it's ability to boot at all.  As a matter of fact that's what made me look seriously (instead of glance longingly) at Linux in the first place.  ;)  According to my ever lovely APC magazine, you can get a recovery console by botting your system CD and selecting "r" from the main menu.  I've never seen a main menu, but hey I have a "recovery" CD as opposed to a "system" CD.

Well maybe the recovery CD will let you restore a windows file, I dunno...  What is the eaxact message?  Something like blah blah is missing?  I think unless you backed up that file somewhere you might be stuck with the annoying message.  Try also going to run then starting msconfig, there might be something in there to disable and get rid of that message...  If those long shots don't work then I'm stumped...

re:
your GRUB woes in RH, here is the relevant page from the RH8 user manual.

now you say you have red hat 9. i don't think the process will be any different between 8 and 9, but i noticed red hat do not have their RH9 manual online (so i can't check). It is available to download however from this page here, so if you like, you could download it and look through it for the relevant page.

Yay I was nearly right.
Can't remember how I originally got that, it was either man grub, man grubconf or comments in the file itself...
Anyway the bit near title = windows or title windows or whatever on that page is the bit you have to add to grubconf - which will be a text file in the /etc directory.  could be grub.conf actually.  oh well soemthing that starts with "grub."

i know its a virus because mcafee picked it up, and isolated it, and later deleted it.  ive had win 2000 before and this never happened.  i can try the boot loader thing because ill just reinstall linux.  i really dont care
