EU backs tighter rules on piracy

The European Parliament has passed an anti-piracy law, covering everything from handbags to music downloads.

The directive allows companies to raid homes, seize property and ask courts to freeze bank accounts to protect trademarks or intellectual property they believe are being abused or stolen

The European law was shepherded through the European Parliament by MEP Janelly Fourtou, wife of Jean-Rene Fourtou who is boss of media giant Vivendi Universal.

Warrant? You mean that little thing that's required in the United States? Don't forget that not every place is the USA.

In most places it's rather easy for police to search your home. It's still very difficult here.

We are not talking about the police.  We are talking about private citizens being given search and seizure rights.  

This is really messed up.  One more (giant) step to the world being taken over by corporations and the rights of the common man being eroded in the name of profit and "intellectual property."
