RIAA cheating artists out of their money
« on: 18 January 2004, 00:10 »
The RIAA is shoplifting from the very artists they have on contract. Artists are paid a certain amount (a few cents) per song released. Now, if a CD is copy protected but includes a second session with DRM'ed WMA files (or another format), a CD sold equals every song sold twice, but the artist is only paid once. Isn't that funny: The recording industry is making unlicensed copies on their own, and they're even selling them, too. If you did the same, they'd drag you to court and try to throw you in prison.

Well we've known about that for a while now.  ;)

As a result, the focus on digital licensing has switched to scattered music publishers and songwriters, which typically receive between 7 and 8 cents for each physical copy of a song sold.

Uh-huh.

I agree, it is stupid. But the point is it explicitly states in contracts between the RIAA and artists that they get paid X cents for every time a song is sold. If the song is on the CD two times in two different formats, then the RIAA makes it more expensive for consumers (since its a "super-CD"). Since it costs us the customers more, then they should abide by their contracts and pay the artists more too.
But if the artists are to get the same amount of money, then the CD should be sold for the same amount as a regular CD would be sold for.
