isn't a linux based os, a linux os. and belong in the linux section? unless you mean something like linux, but neither linux or based off of linux.

I vote for linux, pick your distro they're all the same once you get used to it. I vote suse.

Newbies who are into Linux: I recommend Mandrake, Mepis or SuSE.

Yes, this should be in the *NIX/Linux forum. Where have all the moderators gone?

The other admin has a shocking number of posts CommonSense

if your a n00b you should probably try SuSE it's Easier than my ex g/f, the first time i ever used linux was with suse it gave me all the skills to move on to other Distro's, For future reference Fedora Core is ok yes it's slow but their's tons of apps out there. try to avoid something like xandros. the only good thing about xandros is cross over so i can run eXeem, which is hardly worht the 90$ you would be paying for it.

I learned a lot from Mandrakelinux when I was new to Linux.
I actually tried SuSE, and it's real easy to use and stuff.

Can we just let BeOS die already?  Thanks.

This is coming from an individual who bought the BeOS Bible, r4.5.2, and r5 Pro when they were all new, and evangelized the platform like no one else to his friends.

If you want to believe in its technical superiority, fine -- I still think it's one of the greatest operating systems to have ever existed.  If you want to help continue development of it, and hopefully help it reemerge in a new form built from the ground up, great.  But please don't recommend BeOS to a newbie who's looking for a realistic alternative to Windows, because in 2005 -- it's just not.

 Let's compare:

BeOS
====
Quake II
Heretic
Duke Nukem 3D
Doom
Doom II
ehm...

Linux
=====
Quake III Arena
Quake II
Heretic
Duke Nukem 3D
Doom
Doom II
Doom III
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2004
etc. etc. etc.

Clearly, the Linux platform is superior :p

Not all newbies want to play games, but it's more important than you'd think.

beos is perfectly fine (maybe the best choice)
if you are a n00b because it's one of the easiest OS's to use and learn. i admit its not the best for games (that's why there is Mr X and his 6 BQ2 clan members, to push the developement of open gl hardware drivers) but if you're hardcore like me, its great for games. :beos:

it can easily handle webbrowsing, email, financial managent, typing.

maybe BeOS just is too cool for some people to use, maybe just 'give up' on everything, and be a 'conformist' instead of kewl non-conformists :p  :beos:  :beos:

so, i dont really care what Giorgi decides to do. linux, beos, even windows 3.1.

dont think different, Be different  :beos:  :beos:

do you really think BeOS is best for newbies? it's kind of odd that you say you have to be "hardcore" to play games, that doesn't sound like typical newbie behaviour unless i misunderstand your vernacular.

i haven't ever used BeOS and would like to, but since i don't have a spare machine, any spare disk space, or any reliable way to obtain a working copy it has kind of been on the back burner for years* (i actually considered BeOS back in 2001 before i decided on linux, Be going bust was a major factor in this decision).

but i would like to know if you really think BeOS is a good choice for newbies. which newbies is it best for? those who want games, those who want multimedia capabilities etc, i am just interested to know why a "niche" system is good for newbies, traditionally there's a certain threshold where if a system has below a certain number of users, all the users are developers of some sort, or are using the system for a specific function (like a router, or a firewall perhaps)
