There are also other reasons for rebooting XP daily, as Microsoft blogger Robert Scoble explains:

Let's hope this doesn't affect Tablet PC users in any mission critical, life threatening environment. Corridor warriors, on whichever front they are, need the best in reliable equipment.

How about we take the former and forget the latter?  :D

Hey could you link me to some articles about that. I was told that leaving a computer on was just best for it, I was never told why though.

Here's something:

That being said, it should be noted that most people have to weigh keeping their systems on 24/7 against the price paid to PG&E or whoever handles their electrical supply for a constant power supply, particularly when they're running multiple servers.  I actually feel more comfortable killing my tower at night, because I have certain ports open on a full-time basis for remote ease-of-access.  Keep in mind, however, that my Seagate primary drive still has two more years on its warranty, so any failure in that time forces them to recover the data to a new drive.

I say leave it on.  All my computers are left on, minus one that's in the closet.  And my parents pay the electric bill. :p

those guys need to get this program to put on their tablets. its really handy with windows 98, because it has those same problems. but- keep the setting at max cleanup and 100% because any other setting is useless and stupid.

:-D  That reboot is the reason why nearly every (evening) we have at least few nano second blackouts. j/k

Here is what  happens where I live:

* The lights blink indoor for a split second "whole house".
* I look outside the street lights as far as I can see go out all at once (might be neighborhood locally).  It reminds me of the blackout of 2004 we had here. Except in this case in "1" or "2" minutes power on the streets comes back on. I assume that the street light bulbs, not like indoor standard light  bulbs.

They likely need  1 or 2 minutes to get up to heat till they turn orange. They are supposed to be energy efficent this might explain  the  "lesser use" of electricity design in the filament is the reason they take so long to come back on.

I did not mean to get off topic here but thought  funny to mention this. "Reboot" :-D  everyday lets setup a cron job on windows! all at same time to reboot rofl  !!

The suggestion to reboot windows at all daily for everyone is a hazard to the whole town(s)!!! OOPS another transformer  burned by Microsoft. "The  cost of ownership is  less" well dunno... When you have  equipment going bad  not just the operating system as a result it adds up. Not to forget to mention the waste of power from those jolts. So far I am not aware of transformers  burning out because of windows but who knows?

 Microsoft needs to be taken out of society and replaced  by linux.  We would at least not be rebooting "every night" for the majority besides other  points.

The reboot is a laugh at microsoft the blackouts is true :-D

I am just making few silly jokes here but who knows? Perhaps  some of the  minor blackouts we are having here nightly might be actually releated to the evening reboots of  computer equipment.

Now lets add the fun:

* Expensive
* Virus heaven
* Spyware heaven
* Costs allot
* not efficient  (productivity wise)
* not efficient  powerwise
and more..

this thing actually has to be paid for?

Hey TuxLinux, I would call your local power company about that, sounds like a bad transformer or something. And if you live in California, there isn't much hope for you. My best suggestion is to get a voltage regulator.
