USB 's in Xp's
« on: 27 February 2005, 20:32 »
Hey all, Glad to have finally registered after reading the site for almost a year. I now have an issue that I have been trying to work out on my own and need a bit of help.
I have WinXp service pack 2 and my Usb Optical mouse acts strange. Sometimes it works fine for 10 minutes, then it is as if someone has unplugged it from my computer. It freezes. I unplug it and plug it back in and sometimes i get another ten minutes, sometimes i have to restart, sometimes it gives me the usb not recognized error. I have had this problem on svc pack 1 as well. I have tried different usb ports but to the same conclusion, the mouse stops working while trying to move it around. Help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again and keep up the good work. Sorry for he long 1st thread.

PS> it doesnt really seem to matter if the mouse is usb or not, a Normal mouse still freezes up and I have installed latest drivers and even tried rolling them back. Thanks

this isn't really the place where people are going to know or care how to make a usb mouse work under windows. welcome to the board and everything, but if you have been reading for a year, you should know this already.

Calum, ease up, he's a first-timer.
In response to the original post, I should say this: Download and burn (burn an image) a Knoppix ISO.  Reboot the PC from the newly bootable CD, and see if the system will recognize your mouse and for how long.  If this fixes the problem, it may be a problem with your drivers, and I can honestly say that you need to dump Windows.

Having said that, have you checked your PC for spyware and/or virii lately?  This sounds an awful lot like a mundane offshoot of Blaster, somehow.  If you haven't, I highly recommend SpyBot and Ad-Aware to scan for current malware infections, SpywareBlaster AND SpywareGuard to prevent new malware infections, and BitDefender Free Edition to check for active viral infections (just remember to turn on auto-nightly updates and to setup a nightly/weekly - depending on your Internet usage and security particulars - scan session).

AVG Antivirus Free Edition is what I run to keep myself safe. Along with AdAware and ZoneAlarm (ZoneAlarm I only run if I am dialupping from a remote location, which with the amount of leechable Wifi and Ethernet connections these days is becomeing less common.

Hey I really appreciate the input and suggestions. I have found out that fd.sys is corrupt (Whatever that means)but have also tried hooking the usb mouse up to my buddy's mac and it works fine. I would love to get rid of the whole "Windows" scene but cant afford it yet so I am still stuck with the problem of figuring out how to keep the mouse from disconnecting itself and showing the error "usb device not recognized".
When I hook up a normal mouse(Not Usb) it still doesnt work at all.(Which is why im attempting the Usb version)

For protection I have panda Titanium 2005 anti-Virus and it isnt detecting anything. Have tried HJT also and nothing found. Any more ideas guys? Thank you in advance for your time and reading this.

i don't think i need to ease up.

just because i wasn't snivelling like a sycophant and suggesting infinite reboots (or whatever the latest "fix" for a windows problem is) does not mean i was being unpleasant or anything.

i even said welcome to the board!
