help on gentoo linux 2004.2 installation
« on: 28 February 2005, 06:20 »
due to the shitty installation handbook, ihave gotten stuck on step 5 section 5.d.

this is my first time with gentoo
i am doing a stage 3 with the universal live cd. no internet connection.

then , i need to install portage. but - since those idiots who made the guide dont like to think that a newb might be doing the install. i mean, it would be impossible for an average linux newb to install gentoo following the instructions exactly.

and it seems that since i need the stupid internet to donwload and unpack a portage snapshot (i seem to need this to install everything else)
is this portage somewhere on the universal cd so i can freaken get this installed!

so far i have partitioned the disk and unpacked the stage3 tarbal.

The Universal CD should contain a Portage snapshot.

I just read the first post, and I have to ask, you are planning on connecting this system to the 'net at some point after you install Portage, right?  Otherwise, it's kinda pointless.

yes, that is correct. but- you see the problem is that each time i want to hook up another computer to the net i have to reset the cable modem
(im from the cable modem to a hub, and i get two IPs from my ISP and have two computers hooked up to the hub)
and the computer is in my room and the cable modem is way the heck in the kicthen on the floor.

and it is expected that you can install an OS without an internet connection? i dont think that microsuck would be the best place to ask about gentoo help problems. better check linuxquestions  :tux:

Uh...have you tried using "ls" and "cd" to, you know, find the snapshot?

If you're using a shitty $30 hub to wire together those two boxes, you've lost all rights to complain as you've been eaten by a grue.  Stop being so cheap and drop a hundred or so on a decent broadband ROUTER from Linksys or D-Link (NEVER NETGEAR).  Otherwise, tell your "hub" to turn on NAT routing and DHCP.  That should fix up the problem wherein your hub tries to assign the same IP to both PCs.

hey- thanks Orethrius
for the info on the hub stuff.
i was going to ask what are the best type to get etc  :p

'drop a hundred or so..'
well, i do have an income goal of $100 a week fixing other ppls computers in such, but jeeze, is that what type of quality i really need?

i will be getting the $100 one then. quality, not quantity.
after i get some other stuff, like another moniter, the high speed pc tech station (maybe three of these for me) , and another desk to put computers on.

anyways, im done with the gentoo thing as i was only experimenting on a drive, now i am going to be installing xp sp2 pro corp on it for a customer.
YES i am installing microsoft, because the customer wants to use his logitech webcam in msn messenger.
