Your propaganda is dated
Aloone_Jonez:
As far as bloat's concerned this may be true for some Linux distributions but Knoppix will boot of a CD with KDE on just 84MB of RAM and I've tried it on a 128MB machine and the speed is acceptable, and this is without a swap partition too. Now try this with Windows XP, install it on a Machine with 84MB of RAM and then set the swap file size to zero and see what happens. :D
Another thing is with Windows you have to do a full install with a GUI - there's no minimalist configuration. Even though you're running a server or batch process where a command line interface will do you're forced to waste system resources on running a GUI.

When we moved to the new server, the number changed to "one".

I agree. The article came from KMFMS, and is really dated.
We need to write new ones.
Also, look here for the wonderful thread by our very own Californian Orethrius.

Well toadlife, I totally agree with you, your post has moved me.

While that is a nice opinion you have there, I wouldn't say it reflects the current state of the industry. If Windows is bloated, them so is OSX, and so is every Linux/BSD distro that is running KDE/Gnome installed.

I think when people make this point, at least when I try to make it, the key issue is that Linux != KDE/GNOME.
If a user wishes to try another desktop environment they are free to do so, as you will be well aware from BSD. Windows users do not have such flexability, or more specifically they do not have that flexibility provided for by their OS vendor.

I wrote a new one -- bug Com to actually post it.
