Symantec FUD
« on: 22 March 2005, 17:35 »
http://www.lowendmac.com/musings/05/0322.html

Symantec is trying to scare us Mac OS X users to buy whatever they can come up with by publishing an article about how a growing number of Mac users will make them a target for evil attacks. Dan Knight of Low End Mac comes with some pretty good answers.

I can add an answer of my own:

Which cracker or hacker in his/her right mind would ever want to attack a Mac? Macs are untouchable and I don

On top of that Mac users tend to be smarter.

It's funnier to send a Windows user a trojan named "SpongeBob_screensaver.exe", and actually opens it!

you could rename it to spongebob_sreensaver.src and it would look more convincing, and would still run just as maliciously and effectively

Of course security would become a much bigger problem if all of the sudden Macs had a huge market share, but it seems like these are the kind of people who would want to blow this out of proportion. Why wouldn't they want you to think you are in terrible danger? They make their money from that idea.

Unlike Microsoft, Apple gives security updates every month. It appears every time when you go on the net until you download.

Why does Reuters feel the need to hurt Apple's bottomline by re-enforcing this bunkem?  Guess I'll have to start using SlashDot for balanced views.

Why do they even have anti-virus for Mac OS X even though THERE ARE NO VIRUSES FOR OS X ANYWAY!? Well, I almost wasted my money...

I have 20 viruses on my computer... They're WIndows viruses and it's a Mac! No problem.
I'm often asked why I hate Microsoft - "What did they ever do to you?". Well, I'll tell you. They made dodgy programs and standards which have wasted hundreds of hours of my time involving lost work in crashes and stupidity.

Contrary to popular opinion, *NIX systems may need to run anti-virus soft. Even if these WinVirii(tm) can't actually affect the *NIX system, you still need to prevent "pass through" where the *NIX infects Win systems connecting to it. This would, of course, include *NIX mail servers.

If this were a server, then it would be a problem, not for you, but for others. Not terminating these virii would not be good "Netizen-ship".

Speaking of WinVirii(tm) and *NIX, check This out.  :D

Seen it already...
It's not a server, it's just my machine. I might want to send the viruses to windows users if they annoy me... "Why do you use a Mac?" "Because THAT's why..."

Thanks for the link, I couldn't find it yesterday.

Now will they hurry up with DarWine so I can do that!!!
