Opera Software today launched the highly anticipated new version of its browser, Opera 8 for Windows and Linux. Internet users can now surf the Web faster, safer and easier than before. Opera 8 is a substantial upgrade from previous versions, and includes new features such as a unique security information field that indicates the trustworthiness of banking and shopping Web sites and voice interaction capabilities. The new version of Opera also introduces an advanced page-resizing function that adapts Web pages to fit the width of any screen or window. Today's release for Windows is available in English, German, Dutch and Polish, with more languages to follow. The Linux version is available in English, also with more languages to come. A beta version of Opera 8 for Mac (English) is also available today.

I've tried Opera and I quite like it, but for some reason I prefer FireFox. I currently have 7.54u2, I suppose it's time for an upgrade.

i actually installed opera the other day, for the first time since opera 6 and it's not really improved any that i can see. a bit more reliable than some versions of firefox, but if using the latest version, firefox with prefbar is still better than opera in my opinion.

Tough one. Someone obviously stole the code from C'T magazine, but the link isn't to a crack site, but the original one.

i'd say it's not legal, and ultimately the site owner could get into legal trouble at any time from opera.com - and so i would say that all ocurrences of the serial number should be obfuscated by an administrator, while the rest of the post is left intact, good intentions notwithstanding.

I'm pretty sure it's legal. I've been on slick deals for a long time and they have great admins who delete anything that's warez/illegal.

I used to love Opera before I found Mozilla, and then FireFox.
A nicer, faster browser, and not being a MS fan, an alternative to IE.

My favourite feature has always been the Mouse Gestures.
There is a plugin for FireFox, but it's not the best of plugins.

I tried Opera the other day, just before v8, it was looking good - and feeling fast, but im very much a FireFox fan these days
I prefer to use Free software, too.

Fulfilling a promise he admits he made rashly, Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO of Norwegian browser maker Opera Software, donned a wet suit Monday and waded into the waters of the icy Oslo fjord to start the first leg of a swim to the United States.



Mr. Tetzchner was so pumped about the latest version of his browser, Opera 8, that he said he would swim from Norway to the United States if the browser were downloaded one million times in the first four days after its release.



Opera 8 was released Tuesday, and after only 48 hours, it had been downloaded 600,000 times. It may have been pure curiosity, market demand or even sadism to see Mr. Tetzchner go jump in the lake that motivated people to get the browser, but downloads reached 1.05 million Saturday.
