Aussies grab Linux
« on: 6 April 2005, 15:34 »
Here's one for Kintaro:
Quote
"Australian IT has reported that the Australian NSW
government has established 'Australia's first whole-of-government
panel
to supply open source software and services to its departments and
agencies.' Basically they have opened the way for the wide spread
goverment usage of Linux software and services."
Windows [n.]
A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.

It cant be true, our government couldnt tell the difference between a computer and a bloody barbeque, and if it is, why dont they cancel the free trade agreement with the United States until their patent office pulls the dick out of its arse.

Things in our government ARE getting better. After all, Richard Alston is no longer Communications Minister. Let's just hope that the prick doesn't become Chairman of Telstra now that Ziggy's gone.

Things are not better, we have one party controlling the entire senate, its now fucking pretty much illegal to strike, we are going back to the days of Romanov Russia. At the moment the only protection from the government being able to completely withdraw our voting rights and turn this nation into a dictatorship is Her Majesty and the Governer General who can sack ministers.

The United States military have said they developing weather modification and they have facilities with the ability. The last summer in Victoria, Australia has been much cooler then usual, we arn't even under water restrictions. I think Australia's involvment with houseing United State Inteligence facilities is some kind of trade for weather modification to fix our drought seasons in the richer states.

The sensible party (The Australian Democrats) had a big problem a few years back, however they are essential to keep the balance in the Australian Sentate, they will never have power elsewhere however they are a party of highly balanced and informed people. Go turn on ABC some time and watch the senate, the only senators that bring issues in that are relevant to Australia and the Australian People are the democrats on almost all accounts. Labor tied with the green party which could scare anyone voting (the green party should really be called the pink party) for those maniacs, and it has led to the worst election outcome in my small lifetime. The Liberals (they are actually conservative retards) have to much power now, and were fucked. I personally will goto Europe or Canada (a university Course in Canada is the same price as a TAFE course in Australia) before this shithole gets any worse.

So no, the Australian Government are fucked.

Ah I'm sick of hearing about Linsux they should run BSD or solaris. I've just been round a friends hous who runs a BSD server and solaris and both OSes are better than Linux.

Yet you realise that you're presenting a divisive front for UNIX-based OSes by making that comparison.  No offense intended, but you don't see this happening on the Microsoft side of things - mostly because they don't allow it.  Keep in mind that Linux and BSD are veritable cousins, and their contributions to the FOSS community are equivalently great.  Present a united UNIX solution with numerous flavours, rather than a single kernel solution with no alternatives.

I agree BSD, Linux and Solaris are all UNIX but I'm not thinking too clearly and I've just been brainwashed a bit after socialising with a BSD and Solaris fanboy! I told him I wanted him to teach me about Linux. He said it sucks and said BSD Solaris etc. is better. But I agree Linux is better than been locked in to a propitiatory system by Microsoft - well just as long as it isn't Linspire it's cool with me.

What bothers me is that those who attempt to trump one UNIX-variant with another - however good it may be - are a new kind of ignoramus.  You simply cannot judge one man's experience with a particular derivative as a global constant, it doesn't work that way.  To be fair, some people have even had decent experiences with Windows.  I know I have, but I just find it easier to do the stuff I need to do - file management and whatnot - in a UNIX environ.  Hell, once I get WineX set up, I might even start working on hardcore gaming support.  ;)

I aree, if I learn one form of UNIX I could easily transfer the skills to another form of UNIX. It's like word processing or spreadsheeting I learned to use MS office and I've transferd my skills to OpenOffice.

You need two things, An Open Mind, and Google.

Try researching for yourself - find what Operating System is best for your needs.
Don't just listen to your friend and copy what he beleives. Get your own opinion?!?.
Naive / too influential tbfh.

I don't agree with dissing Linux (whats with the "Linsux anyway") just because you prefer to use FreeBSD.
I prefer to use Linux, yet I have never put-down BSD / Solaris.
There is no need.

I support FOSS, and I oppose Microsoft.
Therefore FreeBSD and Linux are both good in my eyes.

I agree I was a bit drunk and I tend to be a bit easily influenced. Yes the Linsux thing is very immature I pissed a few people off here when I first joined because I had a bad experience with it and I don't say it any more because it sound lame. I've decided I want to learn UNIX and I want to start with the shell. But I'm sticking with Windows as my main OS for now.

Is there a UNIX shell available for Windows?

Once I've mastered the shell I could get in to UNIX properly and get my own opinion.

I've just tried installing it, but the set-up program I downloaded was a download manager, and very shitty too.  My download manager can reconnect and continue downloading after a disconnection. This thing is I'm only on shitty dial up and after 2 hours it disconnects and I have to reconnect. This shitty download manager always gets to 96% complete then my ISP disconnects and I loose the download, so unless there's any other way of installing this I'm fucked.

sry didnt see this, oh well, this still needs to be said, albeit no longer targeted at you, just others with your earlier opinion

Heres my opinion, I actually prefer *BSD, Solaris, and IRIX to Linux, you have to note that i said "My opinion", not "omfg fook everyone who uses linux, because my friend said that more pure unices are uber leet".

I happen to totally agree with Lord, as he was right on the money. In my eyes, the only reason to tell anyone that another OS is better that the one that they are using is if their needs could be better met with a different OS, anything else would be your opinion. The only exception of course is when someone is using winblows for something other than modern gaming, as thats the only reason whatsoever for even looking at a windows install (although, to tell the truth, that prob won't be a reason for long).

The meaning of my username "BobTheHob":
It is well known that "Bob" is a nickname for robert in modern times, a lesser known nickname for robert is that of "Hob". Hob is a nickname for robert from the "Middle English" dialect. This is the version of english spoken and written around the late middle ages. Thus my username can be percieved like "RobertTheRobert" which is redundant. As I always like to say "Simplicity in redundancy, and elegance in simplicity".
