Windows PE

Jenda:
So how good is this BartPE? I mean, how much worse than Windows...?

toadlife:
BartPE is basically Windows XP stripped down to the bare essentials. You can add all kinds of plugins - like Firefox, to make it a semi-functional desktop, but thats not really it's purpose. It's purpose is to rescue borked OS's.

You can run adaware and virus scan utilities from it to scan hard drives for viruses and spyware and other nasties that would be hard to remove if you were booted up to the OS.

It has networking support, so you can boot up and map to a network drive to dump data off of the hard disks. I've used it a couple of times to fix peoples PCs that were badly infected with adware.

Other usefull thigns you can do, are scandisk, and defrag with dirms.

It really does make a fantasic recue disk. FOr rescuing windows, it's much better than using linux since you get native read/write NTFS support.

RaZoR1394:
Still it really annoys me a lot that cd/dvd-reader/burner manufacturers are releasing their firmware tools as win32 gui tools. Damn idiots! The binary files from Plextor were just an exception at the Belgium site which will be removed later on. I believe Liteon also doesn't support binary files anymore... Honestly, how hard can it be to release the simple binary file + maybe a DOS flash tool. And if they could put a little more effort, they could release a linux flashing tool, binary and a stripped linux kernel or/and just a linux tool + binary file.

About BartPE... The disc even mounted my memory cards and USB sticks so next time there is no need to add the files on the disc. Though main problem with BartPE is that you need Windows to run it, either native or in Vmware as it won't work in wine (at least with standard wine). I ran it with VMWare. HERE is the site.

Aloone_Jonez:
The reason you need native Windows and not Windows running in VMware is because the program needs direct access to your hardware - something that Linux will under no circumstances allow a Windows program to.

What?

The poster above was talking about BartPE not working in wine, not a flashing tool.
