I just bought a new computer that I put together myself and I had a couple of questions.  It has an on-board video card but I put in my voodoo3 3000.  After installing the drivers (which I have used before) my mouse turned into a 1 in. by 1 in. square that looks like a scrambled cable channel.  It was sort of fixed by changing the pointer to large instead of normal.  Any idea why this might be happening?  Also, I installed half-life again (which I used to be able to play fine with win98 and my voodoo3) and every time I start the game in any video mode (and i've tried all the combinations for glide and opengl) my screen screws up and my computer locks up.  I have to reboot.  Is this because of my onboard video card?  Is there a jumper or something on the board itself that I have to switch?  I have never built a computer myself so I don't know what could be the problem.  As I said before though, everything was working fine on my other machine with win98 and my voodoo3.  I don't understand why it doesn't work now.

Maybe you should try using the onboard video and see if it screws up too.
Do you know that the drivers installed are the proper drivers for windows? What kind of motherboard is it?

You can also try running half-life using wineX which is not exactly an emulator (i think WINE stands for: Wine Is Not an Emulator) but WineX will allows you to play windows games in linux with DirectX (there is WINE which doesnt have directX, but is the same thing).

Also most motherboards that have onboard video have a jumper that needs to be covered if you install a video card. Is there anything on this in your motherboard manual?  What motherboard did you buy?
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

there's that of course, but there's also the activation bug, and the fact that P will be obsolete almost as soon as you have got used to it. If you do get XP, don't say we didn't warn ya! and don't come here looking for answers WHEN it fucks up.
I personally suggest getting GNU/Linux, since it's bloody easy, bloody reliable, and you will practically be swamped with people falling over themselves to help you if you ever need it.
