Linux threatened by Apple?

I put this in the lounge because it is about Microsoft, Linux, and Apple (I could have just created three threads, but I thought I would save you the annoyance). Some of it is redundant and obvious.

I don't think Macs are any more thread to the future of Linux than they have ever been.

All I see latly is "Mac threat to Linux" just because they are switching to Intel Chips.
Rawr, such rubbish :P

Its ammusing how a 2000 word press release from Apple, along with a few hundred words of speech from Jobs has produced 50,000 words of speculation.

I should start a counter to record how many times the Media has reported "The End Of Linux", that horrible event that never happens.

It's a little like the radical groups that have been counting down till the end of the world in 1000, and when it didn't come, they simply counted down again in 1001, and then in 1005, 1007, 1010, 1024, 1048, 1050, 1050 - two days later, 1051, 1052, 1111, ... 1974, 1976, ... 2001...
I've known all along that it actually comes 2012!

People have been predicting the end of the world in every decade since the invention of speech.

The millennium bug was my favorite which was really retarded because the P200 I was using at the time was unaffected and even my old 386 would've been ok until the year 2020. :D

Anyway I really don't see how Apple are any better than Microsoft, all they want to do is make money, but they're not in a monopoly position but they'd like to be if they had the chance.

I agree, but I mean more freedom of choice rather than free software per say, yes open source is good but it isn't the be end and end all. I think it would be just as good if there were three main proprietary operating systems with equal market share and like Windows and Mac OS and BeOS. They would all have to inter operate with each other and because there would be plenty of competition the quality would be good and people would have the freedom of choice.

Open Source is the be all and end all :-)

Choice is an Illusion, created between those with Power, and those Without.

Buying software is no different than buying anything else, in my opinion having a large number of proprietary wouldn't be bad. You wouldn't be choosing from one power and another because no company would be in a significant position of power.

I rest my case freedom of choice is the most important thing, and yes freesoftware gives lots of choice but it isn't only way. :D

With proprietary software, you get proprietary formats, and vendor lock-in.

Consider: Microsoft.

Your turn

Yes in the current situation with Microsoft this is true, but if all the companies had equal market share we wouldn't because they'd have to interoperate with each other, for example Abobe's Acrobat portable document format is a proprietary format yet it's open so all programs can use it.

Note: Most the other programs suck. I have about 4 different PDF readers on Fedora, before then I had 3. All of them had trouble with various ebooks. So I downloaded Acrobat, which actually fucking worked flawlessly.
