need Virtual PC compatable Linux
« on: 12 August 2005, 04:11 »
I have a 1.25 GHz eMac that I would like to put everything on. What I can't do in Panther is now run under VPC 6.01 "Win98".

Red Hat wouldn't install in VPC, it's installer hung. X86 PC Ubuntu installed but was unusable because the video was stretched way out left to right. The live ppc Ubuntu runs fine, but like almost all versions of Linux has very little dialup support, so a dual boot to a ppc Linux still won't get me very far.

In VPC Win98 I can access the web by enabling networking and dialing out in Panther.
Plus, having Linux as a "Guest" os allows more control and security.

Why not just install Linux on the machine? They do make Linux for PPC systems.

Try running Ubuntu PPC in Virtual PC.  It can do that, can't it?

PS: Where do you live exactly?  I live in that general area. :)

Virtual PC can't run PPC code.

It emulates x86... ya know, a "virtual IBM PC" :)

It sounds like what you need is a virtual machine rather than an emulator, failing that can't you just dual boot with Ubuntu?

Is there an easy way to compile Linux programs on a Mac? Since both are UNIX it might be possible.

OS X has GCC on the Devtools CD. I'll bet if you built a project file for it, you could build PPC Linux apps with Xcode... and once Xcode with x86 support comes, probably x86 Linux... maybe...

Who knows?

As long as the program doesn't link with elf, it should install on a Mac with little trouble.  So, no Playstation emulators, assemblers, or core libs.  Provided that you have all your dependencies met.  The tricky part is getting your libtool in shape - I don't remember exactly how I did that, but now I can compile Linux programs.  It will use the proper lib suffixes, use ppc arch, and write binaries big-endian.  Xine, gtk, libxml2, freetype, php, mysql, apache, and gaim are just a sample of what I have built on my Mac.

Back on topic, why wouldn't RedHat install?  Where did it hang?  It tends to hang at certain places sometimes.  Tell us where it hanged, and we can probably help you - I've certainly seen my share of anaconda failures.

The real issue for me is no dial up support on a Mac. I've run Red Hat on a pc with a true isa hardware modem with no trouble. My eMac, though, has a Motorola SM56 dial up modem, a very common pc Win-modem.

Running PPC Ubuntu live with a Belkin usb to pda adapter , Ubuntu could see the Belkin, but treated it as a modem, instead of dialing through it to the Hayes Accura that was attached to it. And getting that far required sudo from terminal to remap the serial port to usb. I wouldn't want to do that on a real install. If I muck up in sudo, I might have to reinstall the OS to get things cleared up.

In Virtual PC if I give the guest OS network privileges, it dhcp's locally and out to the web through Panther. I've been able to stream music from Yahoo that way. Virtual 98 and IE have the correct Java to access their server. Then if I want to, in Panther with Wiretap, capture the stream.
Red Hat just seems to slow to a crawl during the hardware phase. The x server fails to start. There are a couple of reads and writes to and from the cd/hd then a blank black screen and nothing.

Could you try to do some internet sharing through OS X?
