Need a quick assist in mandrake 10.1
« on: 17 September 2005, 18:46 »
it was installed, it worked fine, then everynow and again it will freeze @ "checking for new hardware" it will do this off and on but its annoying as hell. the only thing i can think of is it doesnt like my logitec wireless keyboard and mouse, but it worked fine after the initial install. i did a quick search and did not find any real answers. i dont know what the fuckmicrosoft.com is going on....any thoughts people?

Try disabling the hotplug (I think it's hotplug that's going on there) startup script and see if you really need it?

There might be somewhere in the hardware/startup(?) section of the Mandriva Control Centre (mcc).
If not, then this command might work:
chmod -x /etc/rc.d/init.d/hotplug

[devil's advocate]It's funny how Linux can do this and escape criticism but when a Microsoft OS exhibits similar behaviour this it gets flamed. [/devil's advocate]

How long have you waited for it?  On some systems, Hotplug can take a full minute to run.

well when one looks at windows releases like windows millenium and realizes taht crashes and freezes are common place its much more easier to bitch about it. things like this arent too common for linux. just my opinion.

True but Windows XP and 2000 aren't that bad.

As piratePenguin said have you tried disabling hotplug? Pressing ctrl-break as soon as the "checking for new hardware" message appears might also help.

Does Mandrake use Kudzu?  It sounds to me like that's the problem, not hotplug.  I never had a problem with kudzu, so I never bother to disable it on my Redhat boxes, but I never fully trusted it.
