Anti MS Speech could use a bit of help.
« on: 8 September 2005, 22:31 »
First of all Hello and thank you taking the time to read this thread. Basically Im a college student I need a bit of Help in a Persausive Speech. My topic is basically Microsoft Is destorying the Software Industry and How there much better alternatives. I know most of the reasons why it sucks MS conerns the market selling inferior porducts filled with a plethora of bug, glitches, and flaws, at higher prices just to name a few. Basically where I run into problems is in Finding info articles(magazines, journals, or books) with authority. I just see people as myself who do not have real authority but know plenty about about the industry nut have no real authority. Basically If any of you could sent me some links with professional with authority stating Microsoft Altnertaive Products are better and stating claims with evidence Id be soo grateful. Im going to be giving the speech in front of laround 100 college students so by help me we can further raise awareness on alternative to Microsofts products and there wrondoings in the industry. Once again thank you for time and help.

Here's a couple pretty good articles about Microsoft servers that might help:

Of course those articles aren't completely bias free, as the later discussion shows:

I think one of the problems you are going to run into concerns the definition of authoritative.  Is wikipedia authoritative?  Is a blog from a self-proclaimed 'industry insider' authoritative?  Hell, is a story on Fox News about how great the president is authoritative?

The movement away from Microsoft has some corporate shouters, but no real or well-defined central organization (and that's a good thing).  The software industry as a whole doesn't have any oversight committee, and even if it did, I doubt they would be as hard on Microsoft as they should.  Again, this leads to a distinct lack of what I would call authoritative sources.  Meaning that everything you hear that is wrong with Microsoft is going to be somebody's opinion, and the same holds for everything you hear that is great about Microsoft.  Nobody has the time or the desire to sit down and come up with some laboratory experiments that would prove that Windows sucks.  Actually, I have one, but it is very biased - it involves trying to get Excel to do a task that awk can do in 15 seconds.

So you have newspaper articles and magazine articles and reviews and blogs and your own experience, but what qualifies any of them to be authoritative.  I've worked with computers since the Apple II, but that doesn't make me a more reliable source than someone else.  A degree in computer science from MIT doesn't make someone a more reliable source than me either.  Now, when it comes to stuff like x86 architecture, or C++, then finding qualifiable experts is no trouble.  But finding qualifiable experts in an area which is as much political/economical/ethical as it is a matter of personal choice, well that's pretty much impossible.  So keep that in mind when you put your bibliography together.

Hell No, no, and no.

When dealing with these, issues, your source is very important.  Look at the rest of the site.  Try and identify if there is a vested interest.  Check to see if the information has been verified, see if it can be verified.  For example, the "Hidden Files" article on this site.  It is not a reliable source of information, due to a few factors.  Note the date, it is outdated.  note the other articles here.  This site has a vested interest in being opposed to MS, no matter what they do.  The hidden files can not be verified as truthful.  In fact, further testing shows that it is wrong.  Therefore this site is not a reliable source.

Your best sources are going to be documents that can be verified to be from Microsoft, and reflect Microsoft policy.
2 motherfuckers have sigged me so far.  Fuck yeah!

Hell No, no, and no.

I think the correct order would be 'no, no, and Hell No'.

Your best sources are going to be documents that can be verified to be from Microsoft, and reflect Microsoft policy.

But to use official Microsoft docs to prove Microsoft is bad requires a personalized translation of the docs, which ruins their source credibility.  By taking an internal Microsoft document and using it to show that Microsoft is bad, you are implying that you yourself are a reliable expert.  If you are a reliable expert, you don't need to use Microsoft internal documents.

I have no idea what a solution for this particular case is.  I'm merely pointing out that every solution will have some flaws, based on the actual workings of the software industry.

No, but there's a version for Apple Pages.  The webmaster has that.

I was joking, but seriously how about a standard open easily editable format such as OpenOffice or rtf.
