why did you reinstall windows xp?
try
http://java.sun.com/getjava/
you can get the java virtual machine there i think (if i understand you correctly) and you can get it for linux too, which i strongly suggest you get as well as, or preferably instead of windows xp.

The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine got yanked for a while but it should be back now(it has been back since Aug, 19th). If you can't find it there you can download the latest build (3805)
here.

yeah, better get the microsoft version instead of the Sun microsystems version, eh? since Sun invented the Java Virtual Machine, i am sure that Microsoft's attempt will be a lot better. (sarcasm in case you didn't know).
Yes, go and get the Microsoft version. I hope it fucks up winXP and forces you to buy a new licence next year. and the year after. and the year after that. (oh hang on, that's what happens with winXP
anyway
isn't it?)
