 IIRC, that was a decision made by Paul Allen to diversify Microsoft's portfolio.

Most of those investments they did in the 90's do not affect 2006.
For example, they invested in UGC Europe (aka UPC). I'm using Internet and digital television off UPC.
They use Solaris for their servers, and they use Thompson's JAVA based digital cable decoders (instead of Microsoft's ones).
