Title: Just got a 200 GB HD...
Post by: Laukev7 on 20 June 2006, 01:48
It's fucking huge, and I don't know what to install on it.

Ideas?

Install Vista? You might just have enough room left over to install something else. :D
Or I don't know. Get a bigger porn collection?

I'd go with the second option ;)

Safer to keep them on mislabeled DVDs.

True .... but you need plenty to equal 200 Gigs ... that's about 43 DVDs to equal the holding capacity of that HDD. Besides ... you could encrypt them. Or what I do is make a tgz, split off a small chunk (100 MB) and encrypt that, it takes less time and encrypts the header necessary for untaring the file. Secure enough for me.

Interesting technique. I'll look into it.

I still want to install loads of exotic OSes though and do fun experiments.

And maybe play some games.

What's the deal with doing so much to hide porn? Unless you're IN the videos...
~/stuff/crap/.porn ftw

The problem with installing loadsa OSes is the fecking partition limits... There is LVM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_volume_management), but that limits you to the OSes there that support it.

I've got 180GB of Nirvana shows, and about 50GB of Fresno State games on DVD. I also have a TV tuner on my PC and record everything at at least 8MB/s. Trust me, it's not that hard to fill up a 200GB hard drive.

Movies and (largish) Operating systems are the biggest hard drive filler uppers

of course you could rip all you CD's with a non lossy codec if you're bored.

hmmmmmmm...
I remember when you had top operate out of programs for a 5 1/4 inch drive...

Funny how easily we can come up with things to fill up what would have then seemed to be unexhaustible storage...

I'd go with the porn. Except stop mislabelling. One day you'll wanna rub one off to Jenna Jameson and only be able to find Snow White and the 7 horny little fuckers.

Don't mislabel them ... but put something like "goodpbk" ... good pr0n backup, you can even make them longer and more complex. There's only 1 reason to label them non-obviously ... say someone comes to your house and sees a stack of pr0n DVDs ... they're going to think you're some pr0n nut, like what if you get a new gf and she sees all those pr0n DVDs, trust me, most gfs don't like to see that. Of course, you may be lucky and get a nice, tolerant, cool gf who doesn't care or even likes it.

Really most of my HDD space is filled with important backups (20 G), games (15 G), and live cd isos (10 G). Music used to be on there and it took up around 8 G compressed (I use flac, cuz I hate mp3s).

Actually, it's more complex than that. The DVDs are not mislabelled as such; it's just that the pron is hidden and sandwiched between other backup that no one else than I will ever use.

Installing DesktopBSD. I want to see how it compares to PCBSD.
