Title: Lies, damn lies, and more lies.
Post by: hm_murdock on 31 July 2006, 18:54
Just a thought about the whole "market share" bullshit.

People count market share in stupid ways. Nobody ever says "HP has this, Dell has this, blah blah."

It's always "Windows has this, Mac has this, Linux has this."

Convenient lies, I say. The truth is that Linux has roughly equal "market share" as any one PC manufacturer. Same with Apple. The other problem is that the pundits and analysts love to add corporate sales for peecee makers, but won't count the installed base of Linux (of which about a thousand times more copies are installed than are sold in stores.)

They also conveniently ignore Apple's existing installed base. Think of all the people who are just happy with their 233MHz beige G3 with OS 8. Think of all the people who bought a Dell with Winblows, only to nuke it, d/l Linux and run that. Pundits and analysts count that for Windows' "market share", not for Linux.

The big problem is not that Windows has the big-fat-lie share of "95%", but that the people who continue these lies and myths... are fags. They may or may not be gay, but they're faggots to be sure. They're fags for Windows. Typically they're older, 40+, and like the bulk of that generation, extremely opinionated, stupid, inflexible, and intolerant. Faggots. Windows Faggots. They'd suck Bill's cock, or lick Ballmer's pasty ass for a shot at greatness. Remember, these are men who's idea of a good time is watching the daily stock reports. They have no life, no imagination, no creativity, no real opinion. It's easier and more rewarding to see "95% market share" and be a shill for it. Then, shill it so long that they believe the marketing bullshit they spew.

Faggots, the lot of them.

Jimmy, the proper expression (especially in this case) is 'lies, damn lies and statistics'. ;)

That's a solipsistic delusion.  What they want doesn't match what you want, and you are unable to empathize with anyone else's wants, so they must be stupid.  In fact, you're the one in the wrong here.  Even though most of your statistics information is somewhat true.

market share is easy to calculate, and linux will never have any of it, simply because for something to be part of the market share, you have to be able to buy it.

distributions such as suse may have some of the market share i suppose. market share is easy to work out if you have the figures for how many licences each distributor is selling.

determining the number of actual users though is (i would suspect) impossible unless you conduct a census of everybody on the planet about it.

So Firefox has no market share, because you can't buy it in shops??

Isn't it supposed to be obvious when people say "Firefox market share reached 15%" they mean of the web-browsers-people-use market, not the web-browsers-people-buy-in-shops market..?

Well, yeah, we're trying to get some accurate numbers about what OS people use.  If you use XP, that's a darn shame, but it needs to be calculated.

(although this isn't really a scientific poll that anyone's keeping track of)
