Spoken like a true Texan!
The rest of you fools up north (northern US) are having a little holiday in FuckItsHotLand (special family and senior discounts available), but Texans live there 9 months of the year.
-
It was 37 degrees last week, and I felt no need to use or buy an A/C.
Closing curtains during the day and opening windows and doors help a lot.
-
My sister just bought a house in Hawaii. It has no heater or AC, but it is architecturally designed to enforce maximum breezage through the house.
Can't do that here, though. Mosquitos. Plus all your stuff would be ruined by the humidity.
-
lol...have you ever put screens up? they don't seem to favor windows with screens here in England, so if you want to cool your house by opening windows, then you get used to the bugs...:((
In TEXAS, My AC comes on at 68 and doesn't shutoff until late december...and my windows had screens...
-
As far as I know, nobody has screens in Texas either. My parents' house doesn't even seem to have openable windows. Back in Colorado we had screens on every window and door, and no AC. Never seemed all that hot, except for maybe a couple deadly weeks in late August. My roommate and I actually tried to build an air conditioner using a trash can, a couple pieces of garden hose, and an oil cooler from a Volkswagen bug. Didn't work, but it kept us occupied until it was time to go drink.
-
I leave my window open almost every morning and close it when it's getting dark 'cause that's when the flies get in.

well the temperatures have been getting up to the thirties (decimal) but this week have been barely above 20 (still decimal) - either way, even when it is HOT it's never hot enough here to really complain (though some people give it a good go as soon as there's a hint of sun, the same people who usually moan about how cold it is!), and even when it is hot, there's not really any time for mosquitoes etc to become a problem. i have seen mosquitoes in this country a few times now in the last few years, but it's still a rarity.
the one irritating thing about here is that it's rarely sunny so there's no shade when it is! (that does make sense by the way)

Man, you English people are a lucky. It has been near 40 over here. Luckily, it's 23 now.
-
When it's hot open the windows in the night (only in rooms where the lights are off) and close them and the curtains during the day to keep the heat out.
-
<----Ima Texan, spreading a bit of the perfection Known as Texas in England.
Can't leave bottom floor windows open at night...Yabbo's
Bugs fly in, regardless of what windows I open or which strategy I exploit.
We still need A/c
I installed screens on my house in TEXAS, at a very afoordable price.
As my windows here open by hinging outward, I forced to live a life without screens...sux I know.
