CommonSense got the funds to switch from phpBB.  Also, not having aliases is somewhat demoralising, but it beats the rash of nickname thieves we used to have.

We actually switched from UBB 6, which was really shitty.

hi doogee, welcome back to the den of iniquity! yes i am still here (and i think i am still the longest surviving member and have the highest post count too, unless MoR finally beat me at it)

pofnlice, i didn't know you were joe schmoe or AB or whoever you really are! in fact since the change i have given up trying to figure out who's who since it seems that almost everybody except me and refalm used to post under some alias or other!
Title: Re: Why hello there!
Post by: Laukev7 on 1 September 2006, 00:29
For some reason, I never, ever got around to use a different name ever since I started posting at Microsuck, which was my first forum.
Title: Re: Why hello there!
Post by: Annorax on 1 September 2006, 00:55
I've always been Annorax, although I used to use the aliases as sort of a custom title.
Title: Re: Why hello there!
Post by: Calum on 1 September 2006, 16:31
a good few people from here have asked me why i chose "calum" as my login name! can you believe it? i may be the only active member in this forum who actually uses their real given name as my login name! that's a pretty good reason as far as i can see (by contrast if i called myself "The Haxxor kid_923" or something, i bet nobody would bat an eyelid!)
Title: Re: Why hello there!
Post by: pofnlice on 1 September 2006, 18:22
I never use my given name because it is almost always taken...AB was my alias, pofnlice has always been my log in. When we lost aliases, then I couldn't be assed to make a new account. Joedude is a back up...in case people get offended or it's just not appropriate. For particularly formal boards, I use simply Joe.Willis

Post by: Laukev7 on 1 September 2006, 22:36
My login / nickname is the most imaginative name you could ever imagine: the three first letters of my last name + 3 first letters of my first name and a 7 to make it look nice.

I hate my real name, that's why I never use it. I also hate being named after a saint or religious figure. When I first get a chance I will change it to something better.

Hah, I wish that was my name. Maybe I will change it to that. Nah, my real name is derived from St. Andrew (that's a hint).

Oh, and if you wanna know what the hell Draconis Shinobi means:

The political climate has gone all conservative and liberal.
But you tourists won't notice anything, this only affects those who actually live here.

Title: Re: Why hello there!
Post by: Calum on 13 September 2006, 21:45
well, i might agree that the drugs laws in netherlands are shitty, however i have to say the ones in the UK are shittier (basically it's "illegal drugs are bad mkay, legal drugs are good *). i suspect a properly administrated set of drugs laws on the model of the netherlands would work best, but then a properly administrated set of laws about anything has a high chance of being better than what we usually have to put up with.

* we're talking about valium, methodone, all sorts of steroids and downers, it's shocking what you can put your body through legally and they don't tell you the risks!

Do you realize that if there were no drinking age fewer people would drink. The fact that you restrict people from doing something makes them want to do it even more. (at least that's the theory behind it, and I believe it makes a lot of sense)

For example ... if a book is banned what do you wanna do ? read it, of course ... no, no, you have to not read it cuz it's not meant for you to know ...

I don't think your theory tells the whole story.  Some people want to get fucked up, and that's the plain simple truth.  Access isn't even an issue.  Drink and drug restrictions are nothing more than an annoyance to the would-be user - a hurdle between the craver and his satisfaction.

However, we don't want 9-year-olds buying beer, do we?

I actually know some 9-year-olds drinking tafel beer (don't know the English word for it, but it's low on alcohol).

If it's under parental supervision, why not?

i think that if there is a substance abuse problem, whatever the substance, then having the possession of such a substance to be against the law will always drive the problem underground and make it harder to deal with.

why in this case are a lot of "recreational" drugs against the law? if they were not illegal, the bottom would fall out of the black market and a lot fewer people would be taking them (i think).

preaching to the masses here, the current generation is pretty informed of the facts. Its the previous generation that think cannabis is the work of the devil.

However, I am not entirely convinced that cannabis does not cause mental health problems in teenagers. I know a couple of people that have lost friends/family to the drug (not as in death but paranoid schizophrenia). You can tell if someone has smoked pot a lot in the past just intuitively, by  how they talk and handle themselves, that is a reflection of the permanent effect it has on the brain when overused.
Title: Re: Why hello there!
Post by: Senji on 18 September 2006, 17:26
I think Pathos may be onto something
you know teenagers are like still developing so when the brain
is not yet solid it might be vounerable(misspelled)  to drug attacks
as in they get more high and it is more dangerous ;]
so its still "wait to grow up if you wanna stay normal" (as in not mad)

Post by: Calum on 18 September 2006, 18:20
there is definitely a link between marijuana use and emotional disorders such as schizophrenia, however little to no research has been done into whether this is causal or not (in either direction). It may well be that prolonged marijuana use gives you a higher chance of having schizophrenia, or else it might be that schizophrenics are more likely to find themselves wanting to smoke marijuana (either for chemical reasons, or more likely through societal channels).

Also, for anyone, regardless of age, they are always learning and developing their personality. if they smoke the whole time, then their personal development is done under the influence of marijuana (or it can be speed, whatever), so when you think about it, the person they become depends on their perception based on the drugs in their system. Society has seen this most seriously with Valium, which ruined the lives (in my opinion) and upbringing of many children whose mothers were on Valium for a good few decades, not to mention ruining the lives of the mothers as well, sleeping their waking lives away.

But this is the sort of research that is not done because of stigmatisation, in the media and in government, and it's the sort of information that doesn't get disseminated for the same reason, you only hear this stuff on the "grapevine", and you never know who's telling the truth. everything i just said might eb rubbish for all you know!

that's why i advocate our society having a more honest approach to its problems (our problems), including drugs, environmental health, global poverty and economic injustice. While we continue to sweep these issues (and others) under the carpet or file them in the somebody-else's-problem bucket, nothing will get done and these problems will compound, and we all have to live with it then.
