Interesting... a *beta version* of a *Microsoft* product. I wouldn't dare touch it.
They say this one will be focused mostly on security. As an example, the Windows Messenger Service will be turned off by default. Might I say, that it should've been off by default in the first place? (http://redface.gif)

Isn't the messenger service used by windows admins to talk to the users or something. Isnt it used for real reasons? I thought it was, and accepted the fact that it was enabled by default. Maybe instead of disabling it, they should rewrite it? You know. Make it so it cannot be abused. Then disable it.

Yes; however, I have yet to hear about anyone using it for that purpose. (http://redface.gif)

Too bad the system isnt "modular". The you could just get rid of it all together.

Windows 9x/ME had WinPopup. You could choose to receive network traffic only. There's no way you can do that with Messenger, so you're basically stuck with spam messages on your desktop.
Oh well, there's always Groupware based solutions, like PHProject (http://www.phproject.com/) and Novell Groupwise (http://www.novell.com/nl-nl/products/groupwise/) (now has a Linux and Mac client too (http://smile.gif) ).

Its unbelievable how many complaints I here with concern to this problem.

messenger service was meant for members of a corporate environment, where the administrators could send a message to a group of computers to remind them of a meeting, or 1 person to tell them to stop looking at porn... stuff like that. It should definately be disable on the home version, and only enabled by default if you choose to be a member of a domain controller.

If anyone needs a messenging service on a Windows LAN then junk macroshafts messenging and use Tonic instead. It works and can't be accessed from outside the LAN the big benefit over groupwise as far as I am concerned, apart from it being freeware, is that it pops up even if the screensaver is running. The drawback as far as I know is it doesn't work on Linux. I do wish Accountancy programmers would write packages for Linux. They seem to be enamored with the M$ Access DB.

Ya but for lot's of people I know (the non geeks and for whome pcs are made eliens) MSN is the only thing they use in there computer it's like an ICQ program where you just need hotmail (that is the only email acount they can use ...), it used to be mIRC but now they use it instead, some of them when ask me if I can format and install WinXP (if I tell them about linux they call me nazi or anti-christ.... oki I am something like an Anti-Christ but not a nazi....) the first thing they ask me is if they can still use msn... so if menseger is not set as default in this version they will have an heart atack when they upgrade.... so many phone call I will recieve "Filipe plesea help me msn as disepeard HAAAAA!!!!"..... lol

windows messenger service is not msn messenger
-
Doesn't it connect on the same protocol?
-
No.
Windows Messenger Service is a command-line utility that make pop-up dialogs show up across a LAN.
Nothing to do with MSN.
-
the "net send" utility
-
shouldnt this belong in the microsoft news forum?

Command line? It connects to the same exact service as MSN. Is there something I'm violently missing here?

Yes. That screenshot is not of the program/service we are talking about here (I know the title is confusing, thank MS for that).

We are talking about the command line command "net send 10.0.0.6" and the messenger service which can be found in the services MMC.
We are not talking about MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger.
-
Ah, so Windows Messenger and Windows Messenger Service are two completely different things.
Thanks, bill.

Welcome to our forum! We will assist you in world domination to our best effort.
grc.com is considered lame by some people. However, it makes Windows more usable for people who are forced to it (like at work), by disabling the uPNP port for example, which can be used to control a Windows XP infected computer.
