Title: I know this is old but its funny
Post by: Lacan on 17 September 2004, 10:27
Has anyone ever watched the MSN 8 Launch video? In the video there was also a MSN8 Commerical with Bill and Monkeyboy *as people call him* dressing up as Butterfly and give away free MSN8 disks. It was funny and shows you how Bill will stop at nothing to get money even if he has to lose his diginty.

MSN would of been great if it didn't use IE and if it wasn't made by MS.

That's kinda like saying "Murder would be great if nobody died from it".

MSN's the best Messenger out there. Why? Because every man and his dog has it and if they don't there's a 98% chance their OS supports it, meaning it's come to the point of almost asking "do you have a phone number?". This means that you can MSN anyone these days, unlike using iChat and other forms of messenger services.

Nope  (http://smile.gif)  lots of people in the United States use AIM (http://www.aim.com/). iChat is really just an AIM client.

If you want a good MSN client, I recommend Mercury (http://www.mercury.to/).

You know, Jabber (http://www.jabber.org/) is a pretty neat protocol that is actually open (as opposed to other closed networks like AIM, Yahoo, and MSN). Also, since Apple will support (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=649) Jabber in the next version of iChat on Tiger, you can expect lots of people using it soon. While you're waiting for all your friends to switch over, just use a multi-protocol client like gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/) in the meantime or look at the gateway (http://www.jabber.org/user/userfaq.php#id2780730) feature of Jabber.

Using *one* IM network is silly.  Nobody will ever standardize on one.  I have AIM, ICQ, and Y! accounts.  I'm using Windows for the time being, and I use Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc).  Brilliant piece of software.  Once I get transferred to Linux properly, I'll probably use Gaim.

Yes, gaim and trillian.  When I can build and run gaim on the Mac, then I will be the bomb.

The groups on MSN are nice... even though you have to have a stupid passport account to use them.

Oh, it can be done, but getting all the gtk dependencies is a pain in the ass.  Some of the files in fontconfig have to be rewritten by hand to work on Darwin.  Forget about fink, because that's like 5 releases behind current.  And, oddly, fink doesn't even have all the current uptodate packages to support the version of gaim they do have, so that makes no sense.

Anyway, my iBook is almost as Linux-hot as my Fedora2 box at work.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to stick with Adium (http://adium.sourceforge.net/about.php)... ...which uses libgaim...

Speaking of "old but funny," anybody ever use Riven Movie Snoop (http://home.att.net/~katydiddd/RivenMovieSnoop1.01.sit) (sorry PC fans, Mac only, unless you can get this (http://home.att.net/~katydiddd/rivplay.zip) to run properly) to check out movie #148 on disc 4 of Riven?  THAT, my friend, is TRULY funny.   :D

a really good multi protocol im clicent for win 9x and newer is miranda. very light weight (fits on a floppy). open source, customizable (not quite as much as trillian though)
fast. very fast.

It's incredible to me the number of people who have been noting alternative multi-protocol apps, who have failed to note that Gaim has long since been ported (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gaim/gaim-1.1.1.exe?download) to run on Windows.  Looks like MSN loses another round.

of all the multi-protocol apps listed in this thread, I noticed no mention of kopete.  Am I the only one that uses it?

I used it, but Mercury Messenger and Gaim are a better option for me.

I don't like gaim because you have to leave the client running in the task bar in order to be online, at least the last version I used you did.  I'm sensitive about the appearance of my desktop to a freakish level (no more than 3 rows of icon, programs in the task bar getting to cluttered etc), so me and gaim just didn't get along.

I agree, it's annoying for me to since my monitor is limited to 800x600  :(

that's hardly a fix.

windows users hate gaim because it requires you to install a gtk library as well, unless you get the bundled version, which they don't have the intelligence to figure out. also, if they want to install the window port of gimp, notice it requires a different set of gtk libraries? really stupid in my opinion, but anyway... plus the windows binary of gaim is often a version or two behind the latest binary for linux (but fuck 'em, they use windows, right?) kopete's fine, and i have been known to use it, it does sit nicely in your K taskbar, if you have one, i like windowmaker and xfce so i don't, and prefer gaim for that reason.
