i got sygate firewall the other day.
after i connected today, sygate says that windows/system32/drivers/svchost wanted to do something over the internet. [sorry thats so ambiguous]. i just wanted to know what svchost was, and what happens when it communicates with microsoft. it wanted to update it, i believe.

(first, xeen, don't delete this one (http://tongue.gif) )
I don't know exactly, but there's 5 copies of it always running. I think it runs services. It might be the Automatic Update service trying to download. But don't hold me to that one. ;)

It's the part of Windows that manages services in the background. SVCHOST = ServiceHost. Also happens to have a lot of holes in it.

thanks... (http://smile.gif)
this program [sygate] is wild. you can go backtrace to all the isps you denied. im seeing some really, interesting, crazy sh*t.
does anyone recommend sygate, or not?

ZoneAlarm pro user here. Recommendation: deny svchost server rights. SVChost likes to listen on ports so it is easier for hackers to connect to your computer.

just good ol' iptables for me :D

Beware of the w32.welchia.worm trying to go through a hole in that thing!
