A friend of mine had XP installed by this tech guy and he spent an hour hacking the registry saying that xp communicates with the main office. i was wondering what is sent and what kind of registry hacks can be done. and what about copies of xp installed with a generated product key?
-
Um. I would reinstall Xp as the "tech guy" probably made things worse. Fucking with the registry is usually a bad idea. And if he said it communicates with the main office, and tried to disable that in the registry, im calling the tech guy a moron. I am not aware of any method to disable the built in spyware (and have found no proof of spyware in xp). Everyone says its there, but noone shows their hand. Its a bluff. I think the best thing to do is to reinstall XP. Dont let the "tech dood" fuck with the registry. Unless you are 100% he/she knows what they are doing.
Now. there are some things to do to make using xp better. but this is not a Microsoft support site. Its an anti-ms site, as per the name, Microsoft Eradication Society. If you want help using xp, and not removing it, you should head somewhere else.

The only form of spyware in XP is Alexa. It is a registry entry that is used to send ad companies info about stuff you like(via browsing habits). Nothing personal is sent to them like your name, address, etc.
Alexa is easily removable with Ad-Aware which can be downloaded free at http://www.lavasoftusa.com (http://www.lavasoftusa.com)

um. Considering my recent experience with linux (that is a whole 'nother topic), i am not going to suggest it unless you yourself are well versed with computers & operating systems.
I mean. it is definetely possible to replace Windows with Linux. It really depends on you.

if you really care about spyware, but don't want a hassle, get 2000

Let's not forget about all the spyware in Windows Media Player and that it sends Redmond info about what you play in it. They admitted to that by the way...

Well in my Country Australia,
Its Illegal for Spam, Spyware or or anything that gets your personal information to be in a software package or on an australian website.
Microsoft was already sued from a guy over here because microsoft tried to sell him something he was always looking at on the web or something they also erased his XP remotely because he had an illegal copy of XP.
In Aus if you dont copy it and sell it, its not breaking priacy laws, if you have burnt copy and didnt buy it or dont sell it if you copy it again the companys cant have you arrested for breaking laws
:D
So in any copy of Xp sold in australia microsoft could probley see it online but it dosnt contain spyware and microsoft can do anything about it if its illegal but they dont have to remote assist.

Must have been pretty minor, I didn't hear about it. But if it's true...well, I'd prefer not to think about it :|
BTW re anti-spyware programs mentioned earlier; I too use Ad-Aware & it works very well. I also use another free program, Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/)
Call me paranoid, but I just like to be thorough, I really hate spyware

I log pretty much every packet coming from my network, and my XP box's have never communicated with Redmond once.
This includes there so called error reporting, it seems to do nothing.
I know how to listen in on MSN convos pretty well, I wrote a guide on the basics of understanding the protocol in ethereal.

sweet. I like this thread. I hope it isn't "crap"

Redmond arnt going to spend money to see what your doing? Why would they care? Its not like they want to help with anything.
