foreword: why the fuck are you posting here then? try the windows BS instead.

Answer: you can't. you can't get rid of the spyware either, or make it anything approaching stable.

Solution: get a real operating system. Start here: http://linuxiso.org/ (http://linuxiso.org/)

Yes, the article was quite interesting. I guess I'll follow the "choice E" and kill the damn OS.

Click on "My Computer" from the Start menu and go to your C:\ disk.
Now start randomly deleting directories. If it says that it can't remove a certain directory, then go on to the next one. Be sure to delete subdirectories, dll's and large files too!

Thanks for the advice, but what is "My Computer"?

And I think format C:\ would be better then.

Yeah, I guess it was a stupid topic. So let everyone point a finger at me and say "what a moron".

i wouldn't say you were a moron!

refalm's solution is actually the only real way to pare down the size of windows xp (sad but true), and i don't think you are a moron at all, especially since your second or third post was saying you were thinking about ditching windows.... usually people don't ditch windows unless they are capable of reasonable and rational though.

Well... one small thing you can do is uninstall uneeded components. Go to Start>control panel>add/remove programs>add/remove windows components, and uninstall what you don't need, but that's olny about 70 mb.

Other then that, if your hard drive is running out of room, ask yourself if you need a larger one for multimedia collections or programs. Or if you just need a CD burner for those few office documents that may be over the top.

actually you could happily remove about 1.2 gigabytes that you don't need and replace it with a decent operating system instead, as mentioned above.

i am shocked to hear you say that! do you work for microsoft support? that sounds like the sort of answer i'd expect from them...

It'd really depend on the size of his current HD, the type of content on his hard drive, and what he plans to do with the extra space. He doesn't really give much detail.

hey, if ur gonna use winblows, download yourself a copy  of windows 2000, burn the iso to a disk, and put it in your cdrom drive.  make sure to back everything up that u need to save like papers and such.  reset your computer, and follow the install instructions to reformatt and install win 2000.  if u need to, i can send u a copy of the cd and serial code through the mail.  never use xp, its the worst thing ever created.  you should also try a dual boot with a linux distro like mandrake or redhat.  and if ur gona use linux, buy the damn cds...itll save u a lot of time and hassel, they arent that expensive anyways.

That would be hard to send smth from the US to Russia. And there is no guarantee that I'll receive the cd undamaged  :(  But that would be great anyways, 'cause I don't have a win2k cd.

My problem is I never used linux (well, I've never actually _seen_ it, exept of a CD  (http://smile.gif) ) so could you please name some sites with FAQs about this OS?

what the hell? download the windows 2000 CD (which is illegal) but buy linux (which is free)? You are encouraging him to brake the law and to pay a company money for a product before he even knows if he likes it or not? I'm all for linux and hate windows more than anything, but that's just messed up.

Better solution: leave Windows XP, install Linux, and use Windows XP only for games that you can't run in Linux.

My god.Who actually worries about 1 measly GB nowadays? I mean shit, large hard drives are not very expensive. Look at this, I have like 169.4 GB total on this computer. If I give an OS 1.4 GB of space I don't care because I still have like 168 GB for everything else.

Do you know why large drives are getting so cheap nowadays? It is because Microsoft has a mainstream OS that is always being updated. New versions of the OS have higher hardware requirements. Naturally hardware manufacturers make new, faster and better hardware to compensate for OS needs. When manufacturers pump out new stuff the prices in the old stuff drop, drop and drop. Just because the old hardware is not the latest and greatest doesn't mean that it still is not good. example. Western Digital rolls out a new 160GB, 180GB, 200GB and 250GB. The 160GB is priced around the same price that the 140GB was selling for and the 140GB ones' price gets slashed down quite a bit. The old 80GB model is still on the shelves and in production and of course it's price keeps falling too. Now consumers can buy an 80GB hard drive for around $90-$100 in local stores...$70-$80 online. Realistically, that old 80GB 7,200 RPM/ATA133/8MB cache model is more than enough to adhere to most peoples' needs. That 80GB hard drive used to go for what the 200GB+ drives go for now, but are $170+ cheaper because of the latest and greatest taking its' place.

If it wasn't for mainstream software and OSes forcing new, faster stuff to be released we would still be using old, slow stuff.

If Linux and open source were the top dog in x86 we would still be paying $1000+ for freaking Pentium 233MMX w/3GB hard drive computers. Cheers to MS for forcing technology to be evolved. ;P

Some people just need to upgrade thier shit if thier system can't stand up to modern software. BTW, a Linux install can take up to 2.5GB+. Redhat Linux.....5 freaking CD's.....3 CD's of the 5 disc set are required to install the OS.

uh...zombie. if microsoft didnt force the "evolution" of hardware (i guess that means faster comps, and bigger harddrives) we wouldn't need it anyways.

Not exactly. Things like video editing, and high-quality audio would still require heaps of space.

I have a 20.5 Gb Hard drive - this sucked 'cause I had some movies. But then hallelujah I deleted 'em. And then damn my brother some music + some *.vcd files so now I have 1.6 Gb free. If I had money I would sure have already bought a 120+ Gb hard drive. But if anybody buys me a 120 Gb HDD, I would be very grateful  (http://smile.gif)

Why don't you wrap your brothers head in duct tape, then ask him if you can't delete his stuff. He won't be able to say you can't, so go right ahead and delete his shit!
This assumes it is a younger brother who won't beat you up or anything...

what i ment by this is to not support the shitty micro$hit company, and pay the linux company (e.g. red hat) for working to put out the product.  they do have a staff.
