Okay, I have been cleaning my virus infected computer. It had 57 instances of the SubSeven Trojan on it. 2 keylogging programs, and other things.
A few windows DLL's were infected so I had to reextract all those from my XP CD.
Basically, Windows is shit.
A while back (a few months) I was running Windows .NET RC2 or somthing on my main server/router/dns, all the viruses except one I opened last night by accident are dated from back then on most the files.
This is a pure show of how insecure windows is, and why bill gates deserves to be murdered to death with my pork sword.

Yup!
Windows cannot anymore be connected directly to the internet. If it is then either you're gonna have viruses and trojans poruing in 24/7, (and even more if you use IE).
If you do connect it directly to the internet, but install antivirus and firewall software, then that also sucks ass because a)Norton hogs major resources, and b)Software firewalls are SO annoying. Constantly popping up telling you such and such is trying to access the internet. And even if you configure them properly, they're still annoying cause they cause problems with direct connections in AIM, p2p, or games.
The only way to safely use Windows with the internet is to use a router, which has a built in hardware firewall. That way you are protected, and do not need to constantly run Norton or any firewall software shit.
Of course...it goes without saying that if you use Internet Explorer then you deserve whatever you get.

I've run it for months on end with no problems
I rather like it

you moron, you've said before that you use a router.
I can say from lots of personal experience that if you plug in your Windows box directly to a broadband modem you will get a worm or trojan very soon. This is of course assuming that you do not have everything 100% patched.

show me.
Unpatched and unfirefalled *nix box can be rooted as well, OMG! TEH LUNIX IS TEH INSECURE! if you don't keep up to date and firewalled, you can have just as many problems. Linux is NOT the magic bullet of security.
that is what OpenBSD is for.
Each OS has its uses.

I will inform my roommate of this. He'll be quite interested to know about all the virii and trojans that apparently are on his machine.
and no, I DIDN'T have a router for most of that period

btw
1 vote for bin
all because of xeen's douchebaggery
-
oh yeah
goddamn I kick ass!
I used the word "virii" instead of "viruses". "virii" is so top of cool, while "viruses" isn't. If you didn't know that "virii" is top of cool, then you obviously aren't top of cool.
I, however
AM TOP OF COOL
you cannot disprove this because it is the truth
I GET TWENTY POINTS FOR SAYING "VIRII"

I use a router, no inbound connections come to this computer, my entire network is ownz0r, so the subseven bugs were reduntant. The guy just kept trying to find ways to get to my system and using whatever backdoor to get to my machine. (Looks like a bug in a service that was forwarded to this machine for some time).
However he couldnt connect to subseven.
Whats annoying is the fact that the bugs were using around 200mb all up of space, half of the instances didnt even run at startup, for whatever reason (him uploading new server versions).
Bugs also fly thru MSN Messenger, at school one did, and it would crash Norton Antivirus, which is gay, AVG got rid of it, and adaware could find it (both free editions mind you, yet nortons more expensive and more gay).
Oh im not talking MSN Filetransfers, the port is blocked at my school.
Upnp routers, are gay as all fuck.
UPNP means that your windows system can tell your router to forward port whatever to your system so they can allow a filetransfer or whatever.
Or to open a port so subseven can listen.
Hence on Windows, if you have one of these fucking routers you will want to put ZoneAlarm on all your computers to, because the routers are gay.
-----------
Women and Machinary dont mix, ever.
Because my mum is fucked in the mind, or somthing, or trying to rise up against men, she got some friend (a women) to set up her computer for a business, and wouldnt let me touch it.
The computer ran Windows 2000, which is okay, the Women who did it, did I say women. Let me start over...
The Bitch who set it up fucking didnt put firewall/antivirus, its connected directly with a Modem to thar Intarweb, one day my mum got off the cocain or whatever and let me use THAR INTARWEB, nonetheless, I did, and to my suprise, or lack of suprise, it was slow, odd.
The computer had MS Blast, and MyDoom.
I tried to get them off, but the computer was fucked. So now I have reinstalled everything, installed a Virus Checker, and ZoneAlarm, I have not givin anyone there admin rights, and applied patches for RPC, uPNP, and every other fucking thing.
I agrued with the crackhead (my mother) to put Linux on it.
However she gave me a lot of alcohol as payment now its done, so I was happy.
And she does buy my Cigarettes.
But I have this to say.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGH!

I dunno...I never had a problem at home thanks to my router. At school however, the welchia worm pops in the second I plug the ethernet in if you don't have that patched.

My laptop runs Linux, and pwns, it doesnt even respond to ICMP, the techs can hardly tell its on the network.
they can do an arp, but the morons dont know much about networking, so they figure no ping means no machine.

Even though they didn't elect me, I am going to speak up on behalf of gay people everywhere:
PLEASE quit comparing Windows to homosexuals. That's really offensive to the homosexuals.
No matter what your prejudices are, you have to admit that being gay is better than being Gates.
:D

Nonsense! Gaytes is just the same; he's just got more money!

Of course there is one solution to all this.

Well I have the XP firewall running. (http://redface.gif) It's not annoying, but god knows how well it works. :D

When I was windows only and had DSL, the modem was connected directly to the machine. I didnt have virus & worm problems. In fact, it ran great. WinXP Pro. The only time I have problems with it is when I use IE, or do some heavy 3d work.
Of course, I just blame windows for the softwares problems. Its so much easier that way.
If you are not an idiot you should be fine using windows. Dont use kazaa, dont download misc zip files, dont login as Admin, keep it updated, blah blah blah. Beware of your emails of course.
-
look at all this evidence to the contrary! people who use windows and like it fine! oh my... SEEMS THAT IT'S NOT SO BAD AFTER ALL
-
Yeah, Fedora rules, its free for one (I got it from an issue of LXF!)
I think its as simple as this :
Freedom with your OS : Linux/Mac OS
No freedom & constant annoyances : M$ Windows
It's your decision. (http://tongue.gif)

well. That sucks. However. I would like to know the circumstances for this. I have had my share of problems with Windows, and dealt with the reinstalls, etc. When shit kept happening, I stopped just reinstalling, and did what I do with Linux or OSX. Actually find out the problem and fix it. Turns out, it was usually hardware or the drivers causing problems. Once that was resolved, windows ran fine.
Now. If you had to reinstall because of virii 30 times then you are an idiot. You had anti virus software installed, and actually updated it, right? Seriousely. I only had to reinstall windows ONCE because of a virus. I learned my lesson after that. And why would using a router prevent you from getting infected.
Maybe i dont get it. Why would using a router prevent you from getting infected?
Okay. I think i should say something else. In the past, especially here, I have ragged on windows quite a bit. Ranting, mostly blaming everything on windows. Software crashed? Windows fault. Even if it was just some bloated, poorly written app. Got a virus? Windows fault. Hardware not working, windows fault again. However, I cannot burn a cd while doing ANYTHNING else, let alone have more than a few apps open. But apps like Viz, AutoCad, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver should probably not all be open at the same time anyways. Even OSX chokes with a bunch of hogs open like that.

I know, i'm an idiot for not having anti-virii software, but if the OS was stable enough (like Linux is) you don't need anti-virii software do you? (http://tongue.gif)
It's Windows fault for being virii-prone, thats why I went to Linux, was fed up of crap like BSOD's & random restarting because of Windows (yes it was Windows fault).
Another problem with Windows is the paging file, I found that it goes out of control, its so dumb!
-
If people wouldnt login as admin in windows, and actually took care of it like many of us linux and mac users do, I doubt that there would be the number of problems plaguing windows as there is. Not to say that windows is quality, its far from that.
When i think about linux having the user base that windows does, alot of "normal" average users, who dont know how to use the computer, who dont care about it, all I see is exactly what we have now. Perhaps it wont be the kind of worms and virii we have now, but something just as bad will come out of it.
Of course Linux is much more stable than windows, and isnt written nearly as poorly, but that does not prevent it from attack. When linux has 90% desktop control, you think people will focus on writting exploits for windows? They will focus on linux. And there will always be retards who login in as root, or donot update their systems, who will allow these exploits to fuck their systems up.
-
quote:

Simple. With a router you don't have to worry about anything coming in to your system through Windows holes and exploits. If you have a hole, chances are you won't have anything flow into it from the internet if you have a router because a router redirects all calls to null if setup properly (like mine).

Thats not going to prevent an infection. If you open an email, or download a file, you will get infected.

True. Very true. BUT, pretty much all versions of Windows encourage logging in as Administrator (or as a member of the Adminstrators group). Even XP.
In Linux, you can do all system administration from your user account, by having the configuration program request your root password. In Windows, there isn't any real way to do this for a lot of settings apps. (Yes, I know about "Run As..." but that won't work for a lot of stuff.)
Therefore, you have to do a full login as an Admin in Windows, so people will just use that all the time to avoid having to log out of a limited account.
-
In Windows you pretty much have to be logged in as an administrator to do anything if you're above the computer n00b level. If you dont have admin priveledges you cant install a lot of progs, run a lot of stuff, and can't even change the fucking clock!
I've actually recently experienced a problem while running DVD Decrypter from a normal user account. WTF is that? Just shows you gotta be admin-level to do anything in Windows.
-
What the hell is this about not logging in as Admin??? I mean - let's go to the root of the problem ... why the fuck do I need to log in on my home computer? The whole login concept is plain stupid if we are talking about computers that are used by one or two persons.
And about the viruses - I don't use AV programs (just maybe every 6 months I do a system scan) - and never had problems. It's very simple - don't use IE or Outlook, look from time to time at what programs are running (and I don't mean through the taskmanager - use a program that shows you all the processes) and don't do anything stupid - like running suspicious attachements. And the most important thing of all - don't use the latest version of Windows, use older versions that have more patches - I use Win98 (with all the patches installed) or Win2K (sp4).
-

I use Win2k with Sp4. Remember, Win2k shares all the same exploits that XP has.

Uhm... if you make an account as an administrator in Windows, that account is standard in the Machine Local Administrator group.
Maybe you should install it again on the account that you want to use it on, must be something with "%root\Documents and Settings\".

Shitty. Shitty shitty shitty shitty. I can't say it enough... Win98 is shitty.

Because under a standard user account, if you mess something up, you really can't damage your system. Under an admin, you CAN. If people logged in to their home computers as a regular user, running some worm program probably wouldn't have much effect, since the user doesn't have privledges to install such a thing.

This is not very practical. You lose a lot of time rebooting every time you want to do something a little more complex.
You have to be quite a computer idiot to have worm problems, so maybe you're right - logging could be a solution for the average user.

Um... you can just logoff. You don't have to reboot.

Windows 95 has less bloat (and no IE integration).

Linux has even less. It has as much bloat as you want. From 2 GB of Slackware with all desktops, games, programs, etc. to 1.44 MB of bootable compressed routing/firewall software of Coyote Linux (http://www.coyotelinux.com/products.php?Product=coyote).

At the time I still used my P2 I was still a supernewb in Linux.

Bad troll! Bad! Look what you did on the floor!
EDIT: Any software designed under the "security through presumed obscurity" philosophy is inherently shit. Windows built on that by making the common sense obscure and the exploits common knowledge. If you're seriously advocating using something like that, you need to give us some hardcore evidence that it's better than a Mac in any way OTHER than market share-related "evidence" of domination.
