Yes, but it's not turned on by default. Here are the initial steps to get this working:
1) Create an XP emergency boot disk
2) copy FORMAT.COM to this disk
3) Reboot from this floppy
4) type "FORMAT /U C:" and answer "Y"
When you get finished with these steps let me know and I will give you the final steps.....

Huh? You call that a trick? If they fall for something this stupid then they need to pack that nice shiny new computer with eXPee back in the box and ship it back to the manufacture with an attached note:
Dear Dell/Gateway/Compaq/(Insert any other MS Nazi company):
I am returning this computer because I am too frickin' stupid to use it. Please put mark in your Passport database next to my name so that not only you, but all the other MS computer vendors will never sell me another computer again.
P.S. You wouldn't happen to carry etch-a-sketch would you? If so, I might be able to handle that..

Obviously if the person is asking to access true dos, he would not fall for a "format C:" trick. At least hopefully not!
Anyway, no, there IS no true DOS in WinXP. How can you access something that does not exist?

XP doesn't include CMD.EXE or COMMAND.COM? e.g. Start->Run and type "cmd"?

Why would you ask this dos/M$ related question on a Microsoft Eradication Society forum anyway? I think that this is a fine way to eradicate at least a small part of the microsoft global takeover bid! keep it up i say! Spread the weird!

1) He already tried M$ tech support.
2) He got no satisfaction from sites where the Windows lusers hang out.
3) He knows this site is *full* of Linux people and Mac folks i.e. the very people who *actually* know a thing or two about how to use computers.

sounds about right jtpenrod

During start-up while system specs are being displayed, press F8 a couple of times until the next screen comes along which should be a list of options. Around 6 if I remember correctly.. Option number 3 is 'DOS prompt' or 'DOS'.. Choose it.. If that's not what you're looking for then oh well.. Tough heh

You could just format your hard drive, find MS DOS 6.22 on some vaporware site, then install it before you install XP. During installation XP will see the older version of DOS and create an entry for it in the bootloader, so you can choose whether you want DOS or Windows at every boot. You could also install an older version of Windows like 95 or 98, and XP will dual boot them just the same.
Or you could trash Windows, install Linux, and use dosemu to run all your old apps.

blah... dos.
anyways, if you must get into true dos mode under windows xp, then use a old boot floppy from win9x/me. that will get you there. A previous suggestion about using installing DOS 6.22 then Windows XP may be checked into. Considering I have DOS 6.22...
