Never again will I ask why Microsoft Windows sucks the way it does. Apparently, Bill Gates has already explained the reason for the crappiness of his software.
According to this (http://quote.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates) web site, Bill Gates once said:
quote:
"...the best way to prepare to be a programmer is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system."
Any questions? I pretty much feel everything's clear now!
-
Ah the light has been shone.
Once garbage, always garbage.
-
Here is the full quote:
quote:
Interviewer: Is studying computer science the best way to prepare to be a programmer?
Gates: No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating system. -- Bill Gates, from "Programmers at Work" by Microsoft Press, interview with Bill

HAHAHAHA
Thats the most fucking hilarious billy g quote I have ever seen, ever, fucking incredible.
HAHAHAHAHA
It all makes sense, never will I shout again when WIndows fux0rs "HOW DO THEY WRITE SUCH CRAPPY SOFTWARE".
Bill Gates is offially to programming what Meg White is to drumming.
-
I had seen that quote a long time ago, didn't know that you didn't see that one. There are more hilarious ones in the site I provided above.
-
but that's when Bill Gates was in college
I wasn't aware that Bill did any of the work on Windows personally.
I don't think Dave Cutler digs through the trash

Bill would have hired people with the same crazy ideas though, and they also would have hired crazy barsteds and so on as the company got bigger.

The most interesting part in this quote, is this:
"the best way to prepare to be a programmer is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written."
I have highlighted the interesting part in bold letters. That should give one a good idea on how many Free and Open Source software Microsoft has stolen and adopted to his Gateness's liking.
-
And to cut and paste from great programs that have been written to.
(See Windows IP Stack)
-
Isn
-
Yes.
Now do somthing about it.
-
Dude I have to use that quote.
Thats like quote of the year!
-
I have to use that one in my signature. Old, but still hilarious!
BTW, gives me an idea for a Microsoft joke:
Q: Why is Windows more ecological than other systems?
A: Because it's 100% recycled.

Wow....
I never thought it would be this literal. :D
Also...
quote:
...and to study great programs that other people have written.
Then why do you guard your "great" programs so much, Bill? (http://tongue.gif)

I have a better quote that everybody should use
"Jimmy James doesn't give a shit about MS"

I'm surprised you let go such a great opportunity to flatter yourself, Jimmy James.

Bill Gates: Chief Software Architect

I was gonna say that.

I think that is kinof a meaningless title. I don't know for sure, but I seriously doubt Bill has any real modern coding skill. Chief Software Architect means, to me, somebody who sits around and dreams up half-baked ideas to lock out competition and secure windows lock-in and monopoly, such as palladium and .net.
-
or maybe he sits around with a drafting table and draws pictures of programs
and then uses papier mach
-
or maybe it's just a title.
maybe Bill Gates does actually have good ideas, but they have shitty ass coders.
maybe MS is just a business that's doing what any other business would do were they in MS's position.
maybe if MS weren't there, it would be Apple, or Digital Research, or Sun
maybe
