Ogg is the best. It doesn't have DRM, you don't have to pay a license if you include it in your software (unlike mp3), and it's up to CD quality (and even beyond).

From the article
Ogg Vorbis is indeed free and it sounds great to boot. Unfortunately, it has no built-in DRM, so none of those legal online music stores will touch it unless they tack on a proprietary DRM technology. If that happened, then we're right back to the problem with iTunes and the iPod: you're locked into a single brand of portable player and a single piece of PC software.
I expect the iPod/iTunes duo to get Netscaped by WMA-compatible stuff within a few years.
Dammit, why the *&$# do they assume DRM must be in legally downloaded music?
If we are gonna pay for something we don't need DRM. Magnatune (http://www.magnatune.com) has the right idea.
It's very very disturbing that people accept the idea that MS will "netscape" music and anything else it wants.

there's something I hate more.
all these losers who think that by running Windows Media or iTunes, that somehow all of your music files that you spent hours stealing of kazaa are suddenly going to be locked and inaccessable

Windows Media Player deletes some of your mp3's.

????

It has been known that Windows Media Player 9, which contains DRM, removes some mp3's that you previously downloaded off KaZaA or Gnutella.

What the fuck? As much as I hate Microsoft, I find that hard to believe. How does it know which MP3s I downloaded fom Kazaa? What about the dozens of MP3s I made myself? Just cause an MP3 doesnt have DRM doesn't mean thats its an illegal file. Do you have any articles or proof about this?
-
all I know is that I like itunes. people are stupid. just do not share anything illegal when running kazza or whatever and you will be ok.
-
would it go by what program had created the file maybe?
-
I used WMP9 for four months and none of my songs ever miraculously disappeared
-
Then they weren't blacklisted.

Blacklisted? Please elaborate.
-
A blacklist is a list of bad things, supposedly appliciable in this situation. In the TCPA view, certain pirated versions of programs and such would be "blacklisted", ie refuse to run. If an mp3 hash or md5 is found to be shared on kazaa from a bunch of users, Microsoft could blacklist them - the media player would delete all blacklisted items.
At least that's how I think it would go.

why not walk the middle (http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=138888) ground?
another reason itunes can be trashed

Three words, XP Convert.
iTunes.
Music.
Store.
I don't see anywhere the ability to let WinAmp access it. Besides, Winamp is a shadow of its former self. It used to be good. Good enough that I used it. The current versions are so bad that I chose Media Player instead.
Oh, and what does WMP do that Winamp doesn't?
That's right... managed library. When you have as many songs as I, then guess what? It sucks ass trying to slough through them in folders.
So, please, no more tears over the fact that someone might want to use something you don't like.
edit: The conspiracy theories are getting absurd

Even Winamp 5?
-
I think Winamp 5 sucked. I still use Winamp 3 on the windoze half of my dual boot.
And I don't go for media libraries or anything. Just like multiple desktops, it's something I find completely useless.
-
Winamp 5 is the best. I use it on my parent's PC, and it rocks.

I have no conspiracy theories, all I know is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to remove WMP9 after you install it. Reason enough to never install it.
-
The only way to do it is to make a restore point before you install it. In fact, the WMP9 install made the restore point for me.
-
Pretty damning evidence against it being impossible to remove.
-
all i can say is soul seek (http://www.slsknet.org/)
why pay when you can get it free?

BEACUASE EYE AM TEH MUZAK GUY AEND EYE SAY YUO AER TEH STEALAR MAN!!!!111111loloololololol

WMP I've got seems that old it doesn't know what an mp3 is. And the rest of win98 seems perfectly capable of deleting anything useful without it. Got Real1 player that spends its time trying to connect to the net instead of playing. Maybe it's bored.
Cheer up. Bill might be fined 10 minutes income...

At least RealOne Player is made for Windows and Linux.
