This is my first post here so please excuse me if i'm asking this question in the wrong forum.
I'm using windows 98.I've deleted my temporary internet files file and also the cookies file, how do i bring back what i've just deleted if that makes any sense?
-
Why would you want to bring it back?
Windows .tmp files are basically a one time use scratch-pad type file that Windows uses and is supposed to delete when it's done with them. Run Windows again and it will make new temp files for you to delete at a later date.
Cookies? I delete my cookies every time I close my Internet Browser. Go surf the Internet and you can collect some new cookies.
Now? What did you want?
-
Oh! I'm sorry, you said temporary Internet files not Windows temp files. The temporary Internet files are just as useless and should be deleted any time you find them. They serve an ambigious, fleeting purpose. Go surf the Internet using Internet Explorer and you will collect some new ones.
Is there anything else we can help you with?
-
yes, but why do you want to bring them back?
there are several "forensics" programs that may be able to help you, and some are free to use (can't think of any offhand though...)
let us know why you want these useless files, and maybe we can put your mind to rest.

Hi,
basically a good few of my buddies have websites which aren't on any search engines, there sites with family pictures and weddings and things like that which nobody else would really be interested in but relatives and friends. When I first got the addresses I typed them into the address bar and bookmarked them since there were no real links anywhere to the sites.
I've lost contact with nearly all of my old buds and there is no real way way for me to get all the lost web addresses all over again.
I went mad about 2 weeks ago spring cleaning my hard drive and I also deleted a lot of web addresses etc by accident since I know very little about computers.
I'm hoping there is some way for me to get back deleted cookies and temporary internet files so as I won't have tear up the house looking for old phone numbers and old email addresses, most of which will probably have changed by now.
Thanks.

The temp Internet files and old cookie files are unusable, by deleting them you didn't lose anything.
What browser and what version of Windows are you using?
I can take a whack at it but, I'm sure someone here knows better than me how to dig in the *hidden* files.
Have you checked your history file?

Hi,
I'm using windows 98 and I use internet explorer to browswe the web.
The mistake I made is that I thought that everything that you delete goes straight to the recycle bin and that it could be easily restored afterwards at will.I wouldn't have been so careless and deleted so much otherwise, again I am a complete computer novice.
thanks for trying to help.

Ok. Like I said, even if you restored the Window's temp files and the old cookies they wouldn't help you. Here is an article that explains a lot and will show you how to reach the really hidden files that include the information you are looking for.
http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml (http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml)
Read through it till you understand it, then see if you locate those files and scan through them.

Thanks very much,I'll try reading that article and hopefully I'll be able to understand a little more.
Thanks again.

Try this, see if it works.
