Title: Windows XP Mouse
Post by: isolationist on 12 February 2003, 10:01
My school installed XP Professional (don't ask me why) and my friend pointed out that the mouse cursor is exactly the same as the Windows 3.1 cursor (with the slight kink in it). Aparantly XP is supposed to be a new OS, but it clearly isn't.

Could I get some comments about this?

There are many, many other things wrong with Windows XP besides mouse cursors.

Furthermore, I'm outraged that our schools are wasting money on stupid shitty proprietary software.  Apparently they haven't visited open source now (http://www.redhat.com/opensourcenow/).

So..... you want what? An orange orangutan instead of an arrow?

windows' mouse similarity has nothing to do with the superiority of their product i promise. all you need to do is add a new set of icon graphics to fix that. windows is fundamentally crap at its most basic level and changing the mouse cursor won't help.

It appears that many of you have misunderstood me. I am explaining that Windows XP has similar problems found in previous versions od Windows, which could be evidence that they have gotten an old, buggy kernel and put more flashy graphichs on it, which is probaby exactly what they have done. I am outraged by this. I am even more outraged by the school installing XP anyway. We previously had Windows 98 on everything last year and when I returned to school this year, everything was XP and there was no end of troubble. No Internet, couldn't log on etc. even though Win 98 still worked fine!

People who upgrade to the newest thing simply because it's new, not because it's better, outrage me too much.

I dont think your school upgraded to the newest Windows because it's new (unless your school is rich, unlike mine) They (i think) upgraded for the benefit of the students (lol sounds stupid).  The school actually has good intensions although they are going about it all wrong, they are tring to give you a more modern day computer world.  This makes sense, the school doesn't want to use older software because it is (they think) not used anymore.  School learned a valuable lesson in MS OS's didnt they?

If i was you i'd talk to who ever is incharge of the computer area, more than likely their computer illiterate but if you are sincere they'll listen.

it's simply appearance, that's all.

Windows NT 3.1 used the same, identical cursor as Win31, and it never got changed, except in 2000, when they added an extra pixel at the tip to make it "sharp"

yeah, xpee sucks ass, but the underlying kernel shares NO SIMILARITY to Windows 9x, other than API support. there is no DOS in NT, even though an entire UNIX layer can be added (I've heard that it improves the stability)

It wouldn't suprise me it the UNIX layer for NT improved stability.
