I was wondering how other people protect their computers from viruses ,spyware ,dialers; and which antovirus programs you consider bast.
Personaly I have norton antivirus instaled and Agniotum outpost firewall. What I can say is that norton sucks . I think PC-Cillin and Avast are a lot batter ....and what do you think ??

Two words:
Not Norton.

I'd say PC-Cillin is the best...my brother's machine has it.  I don't run anything on my own box, but do run Trend Micro's Housecall Java thingy every once in a while.

AVG or Mcafee are good. But I use Freedom because I get it free with my ISP.

The best antivirus? I would say Mac OS X.

Seriously though, as its name implies, this forum is about alternatives to Microsoft products, not palliative solutions. The best protection against viruses is an operating system that has less security holes and more inherent protections against unauthorised tampering with system files.

Sorry if I come off as annoying. But you will find us more helpful if you ask questions about alternatives.  (http://smile.gif)

Heh, yeah, as a Slashdotter once said:

XP SP2: As secure as Linux...if every user were root.

When I had Linux operational on my laptop, chkroot and cron and all that.  I might actually consider using BitDefender Linux Edition (http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/products.php?p_id=16) once I get my Linux partition back up and running.  Now that I'm stuck in hell every time I boot my laptop until I can fix the problem with a KP at the VFS load on Slack 10, I use   BitDefender Free Edition (http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/products.php?p_id=24) - it's kicked NAV's ass so far.

Once one of my friends was having some problems with her computer, and desperately needed anti-virus (had none). I did a quick google and suggested this thing (http://free-av.com/), but it messed up her computer. Now she's using Norton, but is there some good, free software out there that I can recommend in the future? I think that ClamWin (http://www.clamwin.net/) is free and open-source, but I haven't had a chance to try it.

Or maybe I should go back to converting my friends to Linux....

This company http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php) offers free antivirus and free virus definition updates.

My Mac has no virus software.

Bringing this thread back...

I'm pretty happy with AntiVir from www.download.com. (http://www.download.com.) I used AVG 7.0 for awhile but it has way too many bugs. Norton and Mcaffee are both worthless system hogging ripoffs. I pretty much feel the same way about Norton as I do about Microsoft and AOL.

everyone that uses Anti-Vir
http://www.free-av.de
knows that it is the best, and as soon as you know this norton and other big brand AV's are just bloatware shit.
i would say kapersky labs scanner, and then Anti-Vir would be tied for best AV you can get.
and AVG, it sucks.

Yep, i gotta say that AntiVir is probably the best after Kaspersky, the only thing is that Kaspersky detects much more trojans, but it takes much more system resources if you have an old-lame PC  :D
Ah and Kaspersky detected 33 viruses on my computer, when other programs that were installed just before (few hours earlier) detected none of em (I talk about F-Prot, Panda, Norton)

-Don't play at all! ahahahahahaa muahahah
