Title: Newbie: What matters in a LAN comp?
Post by: rubix41 on 9 December 2002, 06:16
Hi everyone!

I am a little new to this, so please excuse me, but what matters at a LAN party? I was minding my own business one day when one of my friends invited me to a LAN party. I know what one is (now) but I am still wondering what is needed to ensure a computer is at its at its peak at the party.

(Ok, the truth is I don't really want to look too bad at this LAN party so what things soup up your computer at a LAN Party? Does memory matter? What about graphics?)

Please reply!

Having Linux as your OS gets you top bonus points. And the chicks dig it!

Hehe. I second Void's notion.

What are your specs?
(furthermore... what games are you kids going to be playing?)

Well, I guess in Chaos' case (pun not intended) there won't be a ventilation problem!

Anyway, what will be playing? Mainly my host's favourite games, which are:

>Unreal Tournament
>Red Alert 2
>Doom (Classic!)
>Some dodgy Rpg that I can't remember the name of but he likes it because you can use your own photos and voice in it for the characters.

There is a rumour that someone is going to bring Unreal Tournament 2003 down. I heard that is pretty high on the spec list; so what about my comp? I think all that matters are the following:

Pentium 3(733hz!? I can't remember that now! Doh!)

256 SDRAM (I have two more slots and enough cash for 256 RAM down at the store.)

30gb HD drive but only 15gb is used. (The speed is slow by the way.)

Network card (an old one-IPX-maybe I should upgrade to an Ethernet one?)

56k modem V90 (Standard 'nuff said.)

Weight: Must be about 3-4 kg

OS: Windows ME (GASP!) and Linux. (Phew!)

So is that okay? Or should I just volunteer to bring snacks and drinks? (I was going to do that anyway but, if I do, I borrow someone's comp for the day.)

Oh, I forgot it's Mandrake Linux (because I am a newbie!) and my graphics card is a Matrox GE450 (the all in one card) 32-bit with 3D acceleration what I wanted to know was should I soup up my comp? If so, how?

I'd recommend Doom Legacy myself... i think it was ported to linux, and my parents' four windoze boxes are proof the wintel version works...i'm not going to go into depth recommending maps here, but i think im gonna do a graphic patch putting Zombie's head on the Nazi soldier.... :-P

Good looks. They won't be able to tell shit about your setup if there's blinding neon lights flashing on and off in there. Or fur. Fur is always good.

Yes. And it attracts furries like nobodies business (http://home.midsouth.rr.com/fett101/fur.jpg)  :(

But I have since then taken care of the problem. (http://home.midsouth.rr.com/fett101/df.jpg)

Logitech mouse.  Trust me.  And there's not REALLY much wrong with that PC.  My "1334 PC" (not) happens to be a 400mhz, 292mb ram, sis 620 video, acer beast
