I met a guy who wants to start a webhosting company, and wants me to do everything that has to do with tech (from picking a server to making a website). I'm really glad, and I started looking at servers. . . What I currently need is a server that's
- Takes one rack "space" (U1).
- About $1,500
- Can handle webhosting tasks (i.e FTP, PHP, MySQL, Perl, Python and mail).
Any suggestions? I'm going to go with a penguin computing server if I can't find anything better.
Oh, and Red-Hat 7.3 or 8.0? I'm thinking 7.3 because I actually used it, and .0 versions of any distro are usually buggy. . .

Slackware or OpenBSD is what i suggest.
actually.... you could try BSD/OS internet server.. www.bsd.org (http://www.bsd.org) It only costs $995 for 1 license

I actually run Slackware on one computer and I really like it. . . But Penguin Computing comes preinstalled with RH and configured, so unless I find a really good one that doesn't come with RH. . .

I use Penguin Computing servers and RedHat for this exact purpose. These are great machines, and very affordable if you are looking for affordable. I also run a lot of Dell rack servers (1x50 and 2x50 machines) running RedHat. RedHat makes an excellent web server. Just make sure you keep it updated and watch the CERT advisories like with any OS.

One more thing: I'm worried that the drives will give out quickly, so I decided to have two - I want to mirror the drives using a cron job daily. What I am curious about is this: can I make it so if one drive fails it'll automaticlly resort to the second one?
-
Use RAID, it's automatic then.
-
RAID wasn't an option with penguin computing. Can they build a custom system?
-
I meant using Linux software RAID, but they also have hardware RAID. Give them a call, they are very nice people. I am sure if you don't want hardware RAID they will configure your server and mirror any partitions that you want mirrored and ship it to you.
