Title: Linux stability

I've heard "stability" in varying degrees mentioned with different Linux distros and programs. Indeed, a common theme seems to be "only including proven stable versions of a program".

This has got me thinking, isn't Linux far more stable then Windows XP or 2K? Why the big concern over stability then? Do "not-so stable" programs bring it down to XP levels, or is an unstable Linux always better then XP?

Unix and Linux are FAR more stable than ANY Micro$haft OS.  Thats not to say you can't crash a Linux or commercial Unix box, you can.  I have crashed all of the above.

Stability is relative. Thinks like the CPU/CPU'S and the rest of the hardware and the applications can all detract or enhance a systems stability.

Also any great system can be badly configured so that it's not as stable anymore.
