Title: Does anyone recommend Lindows?
Post by: bwid_s_01 on 25 July 2003, 02:27
Does anyone recommend Lindows as a good Windows replacement? I'm going to try it but am wondering what others think of it.

Lindows is actually a pretty good distro but I can't recommend them because of their marketing practices. They exaggerate it's capabilities for one thing. Most of all, unless I've misunderstood greatly, you only get updates and fixes for one year after you buy it. After that you have to pay for membership in their click-n-run warehouse even just to update. Even M$ isn't set up like that(yet).

As a Windows replacement, consider Xandros (deluxe with better Windows app support costs about $90, standard about $35), the latest beta of Lycoris (it even looks like Win XP), or better still, Mandrake.

But I most recommend experimenting with a run-from-cd distro like Knoppix; this will help you learn the basics of using Linux before you install it.

Hope that helps.  (http://smile.gif)

By the way, Lindows 4.0 is out, so I hope you're basing your judgement of Lindows based on that version, not 3.0.
Now, thing about Lindows as a Windows replacement is that it can supposedly run Windows programs.
Is this true?? Can it run any program designed for Windows? I dont get how would that even be possible since most Windows programs check your OS during setup. Please explain if you know how this works.

if im remembering correctly lindows almost embeds wine or something similar.
ive used it and i felt dirty using it. i cant explain any better than that.
i would definatley suggest lycros for an xp user to crossover with. also the suggestion of boot-from-cd distros is very good for any first timers.

It cant run _all_ windows programs, if they claim they can just view it as marketing.  Mandrake and other distros have wine as well - as does Knoppix for that matter.

No, I haven't used Lindows 4.0; it only came out just recently. However, they haven't changed their policy about only being allowed to download updates for a year after the purchase as far as I know.

As  to how it works using Windows programs, you choose which Windows version you wish to emulate - 3.1, 95 or 98. So when you install something that checks, it will appear to be the version you selected.

to answer the question, anybody who uses lindows wasted their time and money. they should have used Lycoris Desktop instead. i'll say no more, those who have the inclination know the URL for google.

Yes, I would not suggest Lindows... The reviews and the other things i've read about it were quite negative. Get a few downloads for your distro - and then PAY for everything you get. It has a taste of "lets make money out of those windows users who aren't yet comfortable enough with linux but want to switch..".

I moved from Windowses to Redhat and it created no major problems, years ago. Then Mandrake (which felt more windows like and less professional9, then Debian which I like a lot .. and then said a total goodbye for Windows.

If I still was a pc user, I'd goo for Redhat or Debian - and if the pc was p2 400 mhz / 6 GB HD or anything better, if thinking i might still have a use for windows I maybe left it in one partition. But sure, no Lindows.

No! if you want a good windows replacement get SuSE

SuSE Desktop (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008BR8F/qid=1063860302/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2_etk-software/002-7163052-8400036?v=glance&s=software&n=229534)  This version can run many windows programs by means of a package called "Cross Overs"

It's mainly designed for MS Office but can run alot of other stuff, the Package is built off of the wine project.

SuSE is a very good os. it was the first linux distro i tried and am considering buying the latest one. I will never touch Lindows. Ever. I don't know why.

But nothing will ever replace my jaguar. except maybe a panther. I kinda feel like bringing back the commandos.

That might be fun. But I don't know if I could handle another "portal" site as I am barely keeping artformsdesign.com going. Maybe if its just like a parody of mac users made by mac users, with mac users dressed up as commandos with painted happy mac faces riding jaguars & panthers with unix operated digital weaponary.

that is a great idea.  What if apple did that?   Solf the OS at WalMart.  Then if the unsuspecting person bought it and found it didn't work on their PC, they would go out and buy a mac to install it on.

NOT

Lindows is a great distro for most people who do not know very much about computers. It is the only one that I would suggest to my customers because it is the only one that they could/possibly/maybe operate...I work in the Phone Tech Support Industry for a large ISP, and seriously...these people need this distro, and only this one!!!!

XP is supposed to be easy to operate?????????? Try, like NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

The software that you download from the Click n Run Warehouse is yours for life! They will even store it for you. Yes, everyone can go online, and find most of these programs for free, but most people don't even know how to type in a URL for a Search Engine let alone operate the damn thing!!!!! This is wonderful invention by Lindows, and for the average user it is all they need, and then maybe after about 3 years they'll finally discover that intraweb thingy modem cpu jobber there where you type stuff in to go to homescreen thingers!!!

Do I think Lindows is like Microsoft? NO!!!! His original claims of making everything compatible with MS, and then his retraction of those claims was based on his falling out with WineX, or something like that (I could be wrong here). Bottom line, look past this, and look at how this can benefit Linux, and to finally give choice to people for OS's, and I'm sure that Linux will be on about every computer out there.

Embrace the 12 O'CLOCK FLASHERS!!!! MY GOD FOLKS, I HAVE TO TEACH THEM THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHT-CLICKING, AND LEFT-CLICKING EVERYDAY....THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER OS OUT THERE, AND I THINK IT'S LINDOWS FOR THESE PEOPLE!!!

Don't fault Michael Robertson for wanting to make money, and no he will never be a monopoly because of people like yourselves. I always rave about how much help that I received from you people when I tried to install Mandrake on my crappy Compaq computer when it went horribly wrong, and that speaks volumes of your desire to have people make the move to Linux! If you go to Michael's Minute at the Lindows site:  Michael's Minute (http://www.lindows.com/lindows_michaelsminutes.php) You'll see that you've already started the trend to eventually have people do their migration from Windows:)

If the company that I work for, actually did the same thing, then they would save literally Millions of Dollars, and that is no joke!!!! Everyday, I have to worry about the computer crashing, and we are running Windows 2000 on every machine there! We used to only have Windows 98 on them, but they were too unstable, but still even with the W2K machines you have to worry about the same thing, but not as much!

Even we were hit with a virus, and now until they can properly plug up the security flaws we cannot ping out for our job, and we have to rely on other websites now for this! Man, that blows!!!

It would even be greater if we had those Lindows Webstations because then we wouldn't have to worry about viruses, or even the settings on the computer when some goof messes with everything, and you have to fix their crap on the computer that you are supposed to be working on! I have to come in at least 1/2 hour early just to make sure that it is working! (I'm not bitter!)

Anyway, Lindows is the only distro for the beginner/most users out there...you know...the AOL'ers! So, give them all the encouragement that they need, and also be willing to help them out because if they know there is something out there that is easier to use than Windows, then they'll surely seek it out, and that will of course put Linux on more computers.

Thanks again for all the help that I have received from you people!

Thanks dude, I appreciate that:)

If Michael Robertson can make things just a little bit easier for the Masses a.k.a The 12 O'Clock Flashers, then my hat is off to him! I think it would great to take over Bill's territory, and see him have a fit over it!lol
But, for the little bit more advanced user, then some of the other distros will do fine.
