Title: Help a mod convert....
Post by: Annorax on 26 July 2004, 21:25
I'm trying to install FC2, but I can't find a boot floppy, and for some dumb reason the installer crashes about 10 seconds into loading.

Where can I find a boot floppy image (and hopefully a Windows image writer)?

On the CD.  (http://tongue.gif)

the writer is called "rawrite" and it should be in the same folder as the images.

why can't you boot from the CD? or is that what fails?

you might have a bad burn or corrupt ISO

The CD's good. Nothing Linux will boot from the first CD drive. The CD-RW, however, would boot it fine if the BIOS supported booting from it.

With a floppy, I'd be able to install from the second drive. However, the diskboot.img file on Fedora's CD 1 is 6mb... it's a USB pen image, not a floppy image.

edit: before you ask, it won't boot Knoppix either.

is it that the BIOS won't boot from that drive at all?

could your disconnect the first drive and set the RW to master? or have you tried that already?

Even Slackware boots from CD. Could you explain this a bit more?

I am not entirely sure if this will work but try the image for FC 1. You can get it here:

http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/fedora/1/i386/os/images/ (http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/fedora/1/i386/os/images/)

Installing from a local partition is easy enough as well, simply mount the iso images there. If you have a copy of Partition Magic (or similar) on your Windows install you ought to be able make room to mount the images from there.

[edited to add] The kernel image FC2 needs to boot is simply too large for a floppy

Mandrake, Knoppix... no Linux installer or live CD will boot from this stupid DVD-ROM. It's either dying or a Windows-only piece of shit. I suspect both.

I think I may be spending tonight hunting down manuals for the DVD and CD-RW, swapping some jumpers, and trying to rearrange the boot order or something.

I also recommend a hard drive install.

Move the ISOs in the new partition.
Next, mount them using -o loop:
Code: [Select]
Make a boot floppy:
Code: [Select]
Boot your floppy and choose to install from your hard drive...

EDIT: Oops, you meant FC2.
This worked for me:

^ That would still require he have FC1 installed to begin with.

In my case I did.
But I don't think you need to.
(I had more problems installing Slackware 10 from my hard drive...)
