is there any way of emulating DOS within Linux without the use of wine?

Actually, you can _run_ DOS from within linux.  I mean run as in actually run in a virtual machine as opposed to emulate.  You can run FreeDOS, MS DOS, DR DOS, and probably others.

go there for caldera's free dos emulator for linux.

They don't want this site to link to them so i hope this pisses them off...

also, what about mtools? it claims to emulate all the dos commands, and it came free with my mandrake cds...

mtools just provided commands like "dir", "copy", etc for working with DOS floppies. "mcopy", "mdir" etc.

Now most Linux distros used to come with "DOSEMU" or "XDOS" which actually booted up a DOS environment in a window or virtual terminal so you could run DOS apps. I don't believe it is included with any of the latest distros but I am sure you can still find it out there, download it and get it running.

oh yeah, i forgot mtools was just for floppies, found that out when i tried to use mformat!

i think dosemu was what i was thinking of when i posted that caldera link, because i remember vaguely them harpin on on some page about how dosemu was based on their superior dos emulator or some crap.
