So if this is true, why do the movie studios continue to force consumers to use Windows to enjoy their pc-based digital entertainment?
-
Because they enjoy freedom, just not when its their customer's freedom.

hollywood use *BSD/linux for rendering farms, and cinepaint(formerly known as filmgimp) are used for backend tasks, and doesn't consider it a desktop OS yet, only a server one: no demand, no supply. when linux surpasses Mac OS they MIGHT consider creating a licensed DVD playback program, and supporting linux.
they will always support Mac users, because, alot of their people use them, and windows is the statistical majority of computer users, leaving linux in the cold for now.
not to mention the variety between the different distro's that would make support a nightmare.

It was Disney that made the wine able to run Adobe Paint.

The real issue is why the hell is it illegal to write a program myself to watch a DVD on my OS of choice? Decrypting a DVD should not be a crime.
