...and boy, did it suck! It was 10x harder to install than any version of Windows I've seen. If you want the definition of "counter-intuative" then try installing Debian. I especially liked the part where it couldn't find my modem (which is NOT a winmodem) and then gave me this sarcastic message about my not running setserial even though I hadn't been given a command prompt up to that point. It then gave me some command to run later to try to "fix" it but it scrolled off the screen so fast I couldn't read it. I enjoyed how Woody came out merely days ago but contains software that is so outdated it makes redhat 7.0 look modern. I also thought it was super that I couldn't choose a journaling filesystem because the lame kernel didn't support it (2.2 series - give me a break!)
After asking me 2528959345 questions (and during the dialoge if I made a mistake I found no way of going back and had to start over) it finally got around to installing the packages, but near the end it gave me a cheery error that said the packages failed to install because of failed dependencies and told me "sorry, Debian isn't perfect." Somehow I already knew that. I think the assholes who suggested Debian to me must have been playing a practical joke. Now I've tried over 5 Linux distributions and every one has been a miserable experience in some way or another. Tell me, what do you see in such shoddy software?

Well Debian is not for bone heads. And for the non-technical types like yourself Debian can be a little much to install. But unlike Windows you only have to install it once. By the way how much did you pay for it?

I payed 20 dollars for it. I got Windows XP for 80 dollars.
PS Just because it's "free" doesn't mean I can't find faults with it.

How did you get XPoo for $80 isint it like $200 or something... Whatever it dosent really matter, use mandrake its easy as hell to install and its done in about half the time XPoo is. Im by no means a genius and Ive installed mandrake on three computers with no errors or problems at all...

Either your outright lying, or dumber than dog shit; it doesn't matter which. When you boot the installer, Debian gives you 5 methods of install; using ISO image of 6/10/2002, I had a fully partitioned and cofigured installation of "woody" running a 2.4.18-5 kernel, modem configured during install in less than an hour. I doubt that an opinionated asshole like yourself would give it a second try, but if you do, READ the messages on-screen; unlike windows, they contain information that will help you achieve Debian nirvana, not the indenture that MS seems to feel compelled to include that restricts the use of something YOU OWN to what they deem appropriate use.
Oh, and by the way, I wouldn't attempt to use apt if I were you; I'm sure that some one as pathetically stupid as yourself couldn't understand somethig that allows you to install sophisticated, stable applications for free any time you choose. Let's see, Windows doesn't do that, does it?

You see hardon, er, creedon, when I install an OS I don't expect it to pop up with messages that say "oops, we encountered a fatal error, Debian isn't perfect you know" I also don't expect it to be so unintuative it requires the reading of 10 books just to comprehend the damn installer. I'd like to know where it gave you the option to install the 2.4 kernel as it sure as hell didn't give me the option. Maybe you have to stand on your head with a banana up your butt while chanting "Linux is my new found God" while hitting CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+F8+TAB with your toes. I don't have the time for such shoddy software, and it is shoddy if you'd take off those rose-colored glasses. A perfect example is when the installer made a boot disk and during the process told me "to avoid taking this long to access drive0, please add the line drive0 :D eviation=-3040 to /etc/driveprm" Why it didn't simply do this automatically is beyond me. I got about 3 such other "messages" and I didn't get a chance to write them all down. You see the thing that pisses me off is the extreme bias you Linux heads seem to always have. It seems that every time I say something bad about Linux you call it strength and whenever I say something good about Windows you call it a weakness. Bill Gates is a genius but he didn't make Windows where only he could understand it. It actually takes a very smart person to make easy to use software.

point of fact is debian is above you at the momment (im not trying to insult you) mandrake would be the Linux for you i would say or even better, download a x86 version of darwin and run that (need to install your own GUI (http://tongue.gif) ) i would suggest KDE. Don't just stuff around with it actually use it. use it for a solid month, doing everything you can on it (i know you like games) ie surf the web, word process, and have a look at the gimp.
Use it don't just load it then look at the basic interface and say thats crap. You will learn to love the command line, it simplifies, and streamlines alot of things.

That's MISTER hardon to you. dickless. I'll tell you what, I give you my permission to not use Linux in any form; that seems to be your goal, so go for it. As far as the "banana up your butt" goes, I'm sure that would be the good part of the install for you, you could relate to that. Making an O.S. (an programs) so easy an ape could use them (witness: XP users) is a deadend; it leads to a bunch of helpless idiots who are dependant on a corporation that may not be by definition a monpoly, but in fact is. It's a hobsons choice; you've obviously made yours. If you think that posting the crap that you do about different Linux distros is going to convert anyone to XP, you sure don't know people very well; personally, I think your just a pathetic no-life that has to cause problems to be happy; either that or your an equally pathetic masochist who LIKES abuse. atleast its not in the alternitave os's or programing forums. cuase i just want to test the "send it to sand box of shattered hopes" feature of being a mod, and so far, i have only seen good posts, minus a few confusions of the word hacker and someone looking for the suorce to a windows dll

actaully, try ChoasNETOS. youll need somesort of temporyary linux distro but its worthit. you are in complete controll and can isntall what you want and don't want

hey, XP Luser; you should be used to this advice by now:
completely uninstall the OS and re-install.
At least you will have a chance to write down the errors. BTW; till you get your brain working again, go with RH or mandrake. BUY A BOOK. I suggest "Linux Complete" for starters (it's the only book i have had the money to buy so far), it's geared mostly towards red hat (so there's ample use of the 'linuxconfig' gui utility, but it also tells you how to do it manually), so you can make the transition a little easier.
BTW; i run slack 8.1 (for all of 5 months now (http://smile.gif) ). Sure, it has headaches and problems i can't solve right now, but I, unlike you, cannot afford $250 for XP and another $350 for the office pack (just so i can use a f***ing spreadsheet). And I'm not about to pay $65.95 a month for the privilage of running my own computer.

creedon, if you're implying that running an easy-to-use OS with polish somehow means you're a moron and a slave to "Big Brother," then you're way dumber than I previously thought. Furthermore, your comments insult Mac users in addition to Windows users. It's people like you who make it impossible for Linux to achieve any kind of desktop success.

You should switch to XP as I have no headaches with it. Also, XP costs 80 bucks if you don't buy the retail version. If money is short I suggest getting something like openoffice instead of MS office. But dont settle for a shoddy OS that renders fonts worse than many OS's made 8 years ago.

well, he mentioned openoffice. hes getting better. you know, i started out as a warez kiddie. windows wizard. i gave redhat a shot and wondered how to use it. i was fucking clueless and reinstalled cuase i didn't check on graphical login. i went out and made my parents buy a linux book. like redhat 7.0 bible. do yourself a favor and read redhat 7.3 bible. with an openmind.
