Title: Need distro that requires little memory and slow CPU.

Hey folx,

I have an old PC that has a P-MMX266 and 64MB of RAM. I need some distro that will work well with those. Slack runs to slow

Any other? I want to have an X-Windows system. This will be just a test (fuck around) machine.

umm... well, I spose you could use x11 with motif, or some other striped down bare bones WM. You could also scrounge up an old version of GNOME which is pretty light weight.

Linux command line should run nice and speedy I'm sure  ;)

That machine is far from old/slow. What window manager were you using with slackware?

I use GNOME and KDE but quite honestly I prefer to stay away from Slack. It's either too hard or I'm too dumb.

I'd rather use a simpler distro that doesn't requiere so much tweaking.

Try the Slackware based distribution Vector Linux (http://www.vectorlinux.com). It has the speed of Slackware but does the configuation bits for you, it uses icewm so should be pretty and lightweight.

Slack is simple; that's why it needs tweaking. You should be able to run any modern distro on that machine, but I wouldn't use KDE or gnome on it.

Hmm, that's a bit difficult. Not that this machine is too old but KDE and GNOME have gotten bigger and "heavier". You could use another much lighter Window Manager like Xfce, Enlightenment etc though.

Well I use mandrake on my 200 mhz with 64mb ram. That and I use kde 3.1. I wont say it isnt slow, but it works. I have no trouble running LimeWire, Ogle, XMMS, Mozilla or anything else. I even can play bzflag and tuxracer as smooth as silk. Now Im working on Unreal Tournament too. Just because the box is old doesnt mean it is useless.

Most X Windows system requires at least 64MB just to run.  XWindows will more than likely run slow.  That's why most people just say use the command line.  You can try using a differnt Window Manager like WindowMaker on an older distro like RH 7.x or SuSE 7.x.

there is nothing wrong with slack, so what does that leave?

as people have been saying, using the latest kde and gnome on that computer is not going to be very fast. use windowmaker, xfce, fvwm95 or enlightenment i suggest. Slack will run those fine on your computer.

If you really don't want to use slack, i suggest using peanut linux, or perhaps vector linux (although i could not get vector linux to run X with my video card), peanut uses enlightenment by default, it's a 100MB download or so, and takes up 500MB when installed.
No GNOME or KDE libs come with it though so be prepared to groan on about how you can't install anything.

Is VectorLinux 4.3 (i think) any good?

and will it run nicely on a P233MMX with 108mb ram?
