Title: Sharing Internet With Mandrake 8.2
Post by: TheQuirk on 8 May 2002, 07:37
I downloaded Mandrake's 8.2 ISO yesterday (I guess I should have read the negative feed back) and being a Linux "newbie" I never managed to do anything beyond making a simple dial up connection. When I install Mandrake, it finds my ethernet card, but when it finishes installing and loads, it doesn't connect to the internet.

Can anyone help me? I'd prefer step by step instructions (if you can) because I'm dumb like that  ;)

Can you be more specific?  How did you configure your dialup connection?  Did you do it like this:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/user.html/draknet.html (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/user.html/draknet.html)

Definitely need more details though.  Do you have Cable/DSL? Do you have a dialup modem? How do you normally connect to the internet?  If you have a Cable/DSL modem do you normally have a static address, DHCP, or PPoE? If you have a normal dialup modem, what kind is it?  Hopefully not a "winmodem".

Ypou're right- I should've been more specific. Let me clearify everything.

I'm on a network. I have an ethernet card, and it connects to a router. The router, in turn, gets on the internet using my DSL account at Southwestern Bell. The connection for DSL is PPPoE, but my router, on my "local intarnet" uses DHCP. Does that make sence?

Yes, that should be a piece of cake.  Just configure your ethernet interface for DHCP in that same section (click the LAN connection). You'll probably have to activate the interface as well which should bring your interface up and obtain a DHCP address. But I don't have Mandrake 8.2 so hopefully there are others that can help you.  And this assumes you have your DSL router's DHCP server properly configured.

Hehehe.. Right after I posted that, I realized what I should have done. Loaded into Linux, and everything works like a charm. Thanks for your time though =]
